Joe, I am very worried about my son when it comes to tests. He is very intelligent, but too much like me. Never applies himself to his studies. I'm worried because I know what I was like and how I've struggled because I didn't do well at school.

Cassie
this sounds as if you kind of have a feeling that he isn't going to do well on this upcoming test?? Am I right??

wordsmith, at 16 he is immortal - aren't all teenagers? lol.

Cass, maybe he should think about the fact that
just one injury could put him out forever. That should be enough incentive for him to settle down.

Spitfire, I hated school too. That's why I know exactly how my son feels.

wordsmith, I don't think he really does realise that. That's my problem.

Vane, good advice, I hope it works.

Moondawg, I totally agree and I'm hoping the pearls of wisdom I'm dropping are not being slipped on instead.

mcbreeze, that's what I usually say, but in this case grades do count. My son needs a scholarship to get to college, or he won't be going.

Cass,
I hated school. Always did. College was a bitch for me, personally. I do hope your son does well. It seems like he will!

Cass,
I hope he realizes that hitting the books will secure his future.

the thing with the SAT, though, is that it has nothing to do with your class performance or attendence. I was the top SAT in my class, and I also had the worst attendance record of the class. Also, If he doesn't do so well, he could just be one of those bad test taking people. the SAT doesn't really measure anything but your ability to take the SAT. Anyway, he doesn't need to know that. If does well, tell him he needs to hit the books so that he can achieve his potential. if he does badly, tell him he needs to study more so he can do better when he takes them again. EIther way, you come out with good reasons to pressure him to study.

Seeing our children in ourselves
and knowing that they are making the same mistakes, or at least following the same path as we did, is one of the most frustrating parts of being a parent. We all reach that point, about high school age, where we know it all and Mom and Dad just don't understand how different things are today that they were when they were young. Nagging is never the answer. Even today I would jump off of a cliff if someone kept nagging at me as to why I shouldn't. Best to drop little pearls of wisdom here and there and hope a few get picked up.

Good luck to your son, Ca88andra! Hope he does well! Btw, they have deleted these tests in Belgium. I still had to do them as a kid, but the youngster of today are rid of them. The only tests remaining are those on primary school level.
