Darjeeling, you made me laugh about the guilt. Yes, I liken my use of Blogit to my use of a cellphone. It should suit me not others. But then of course after a time you build up a rapport with people. I am not sure what the answer is re your 46 readers and few comments. Some people contort to fit in and you don't. Some people don't contort a thing and draw a crowd. These things come and go too.

Dave Cryer, did you post about the Comment Amnesty Pact? Of course it is only a dream but wouldn't it be a fascinating social experiment. Of course everyone would speak through a variety of channels but it would be interesting to see the impact. Actually I suspect that the postings would go mad as many people would simply post all day and half the night instead of commenting in that way and the Most Popular would then be down to that. It would actually be hell

Some of us are here for the silence

It's interesting, I've only been a blogit member for a month or so [hmmm, have they billed me again yet?  Dammit, not sure, just thought about it, okay, digress] and it absolutely asTOUNDS me that there is as much caterwauling and competition [the childish kind, not the "it makes you stronger" kind] about rank and communication when it's a giant amalgamation of BLOGS.  You know, like an online journal, as in something private made public but still 100% personal and so how this equates with the politics of a fan-boy message board is beyond me.

I only signed up to, like you, I think, become a better writer.  To have a focus and a place to post something once I finish and this somehow motivates me to do it, to write everyday and to enjoy myself as I do it.  I know that SOMEONE will see my stuff without having to badger my friends and family who all get suspiciously busy and tired whenever I ask.  Most people don't comment and most that I comment upon don't comment back.  That's okay.  I've got -gasp - 46 hits now and maybe 10 comments, most of them by the same guy, so the big, big, big realization is that I don't think MOST of us here much care.

We're here for ourselves, much as you are for yourself, and dude, golden rule; that makes it okay.  Be friendly when you can and wish to, and enjoy having a blog and a community of bloggers to contact and chat with when you actually want to.  Someone's always here and listening, so take your time and be happy.  I just read most of your stuff and my god do you pour the self-guilt on and while that's enviable on the one hand, on the other it's paper-cut-painful because it's so bloody unnecessary.

I've found two peeps so far that are very communicative and friendly and yet actually thoughtful critique-wise, and so that's two I'll try to stay in touch with and just send them a quick "I'll be busy for a bit but be back soon" when I can't.  Two.  Out of 46 and counting.  The others?  Pshaw. --Dave

It'll never happen, but here's an interesting thought:

  1. Bloggers all enter into a pact for a Comment Amnesty
  2. A date and Blogitime is decided
  3. At this point all commenting is to stop for one week
  4. Bloggers would post and read, but not comment

How would rankings change in that week? Could all bloggers refrain? Would those who continued to comment rise to the top? If everyone stuck to the pact, would it mean that the MPT was a true representation of the best writing? Would some bloggers be keeping a tally ready to say who they visited afterwards? Would there be private email and IM pacts to subvert the results? Would one week be long enough as an experiment? Would some bloggers actually not bother to post or read and just sit it out?

Do you know what? I might even post this and see what comments it gets...

does the "most comments" list mean you've left the most comments, or
received the most?  I've never quite understood that, but thought it was the latter.

MayB, we can all only do what we can, ya know?
I try to use my extra time to not only catch up on reading, but spend more time to comment. When my time is limited, I would rather read than spend too much times commenting. I try to as often as I can, but sometimes, well, it's just impossible. My day off is when I'm able to comment more. Don't feel guilty. You're just doing the best you can. People understand.
