Obviously, so...

...and Dan couldn't take even what he was put through, and, at least, his in-laws were nice to him.

These people sound like something out of The Twilight Zone!

Ainsley,
Thanks for sharing the story of your friends with me. There are some similarities but this case has a whole lot more going on all at the same time. Thanks for reading and staying with me. Your comments are always welcome.

Several years ago...

...a friend with whom I'd grown up told me why his marriage ended in divorce.

Dan had the type of diabetes that began in childhood (This had been the same with his sister and brother, and none of them had lived past the age of 57, if that.  Dan & Sharon didn't make it to 50, and Steve passed on within the past year or so with his age somewhere between 55 and 57.), and his ex-wife had some kind of chronic illness (I can't remember what) that had started in childhood.

They had a beautiful, little girl who seemed to be healthy in every way, even though they called her their miracle baby, because she had a lot of complications right after being born, and the doctors, at the time, weren't holding out too much hope for her survival.

Anyway, this is what Dan told me about his marriage.

In spite of the fact that both of them held responsible jobs (him as a welder and her as a dancer/dancing teacher) and were parents on top of that, her parents would drop in on them anytime unannounced.

I mean, they had a key to the place and would enter without even knocking--which made Dan feel pretty uncomfortable during lovemaking, for one thing.

I assume that this particular aspect of her folks barging in like that made her uncomfortable, too--though she wasn't really bothered by it at other times.

Dan said that they could be watching a show on TV, and in would come the in-laws and say that it was their bedtime and insisted on staying until they were tucked in, just as if they were a couple of little kids.

Since this couple wasn't too healthy, I guess they were just concerned about them, but it drove Dan bananas.

He told his wife that he couldn't continue to live in this kind of situation, so please lay down some ground rules for her folks.

She thought that he was blowing things out of proportion.

Eventually, they got a friendly divorce, and Dan moved next door to his folks--where he felt he had more privacy than he did in his marriage--while his wife continued to live as she'd been living.

They shared custody of their daughter.

At least in the case of Dan and his wife there was no abuse involved, and he felt loved and appreciated by his wife and her family--just a little too smothered.

I'm surprised that this guy "allowed" his wife to have a job, because this type usually doesn't--though, again, Michael Schiavo did (though he kept an eagle's eye on Terri's odometer to make sure that she was simply going to and from work, to the supermarket, and other "approved" places).

Looking forward to the next installment...

Hugs!
AJ
