I wouldn't steal material objects but I do believe I would take food or clothing if it was nessasary for the survival. I am thankful that I am not forced to make this decision.  Great Post!!

Some of the looters a cops

They took ammunition for their guns, fuel for their cars and food and water.  They didn't have any choice.  I think some of the looting is people who would never have stolen before but saw opportunity (and have no character) and others are just plain criminals.

But you're right, how can anyone know what they would or would not do to survive.  A life boat comes to rescue folks.  The choice is you or someone old and sick.  Another boat isn't coming for a long time.  No food, no water.  WHAT would you do?

Thoughtful post.
I'm a survivor. I would do what it takes to survive.

It's not that fact that people are taking things, it's what they take. Survival is one thing. Greed and profit another entirely and the two cannot be compared.

I wonder how they are going to eat those TV'S?
And when it comes to the time to get food they are going to have to put the DVD players down. Boy are they going to be upset when they find there in no place to use their new toys.

This is a post of great wisdom, for sure. I am nearly 100% certain I would not steal a television or dvd player, etc. no matter what--because wrong is wrong no matter how you might justify it. Taking food and whatnot for survival, yes. Of course it's like you say...true character isn't revealed until you are faced with the choice to loot or not.

Hear Hear...

Terrific post Alf. I myself have had to live in shelters at different times in my life and on the street others. I've had nothing to my name and now I have a lot. If I lost it all right now I know I'd survive and I'd do it honestly, just like all the times before. But I think if my kids were involved, I'd take whatever I had to, to ensure their survival. It's that simple.

We are hunters and gathers
looting to survive I agree with, guns are another, they hit the pawn shops first for guns and worked their way to the big shops for guns and TV's that is wrong, the guns to protect is one thing but I am affraid the guns are in the wrong hands.
