I've always thought it was the Soc Sec number for freelancers but
I'm applying to teach an online class, and they said I need to fill out a W-9 which is a Tax ID number form.  But it does have a space for Soc Sec # too, nothing's easy, huh?

Not sure, but your social security number is what you can use when
you go to an accountant and tell him you're a freelance writer.  If you charge sales tax, you probably need a tax ID number.  You can contact your Small Business Association in your town for details.  Sometimes even your bank or accountant can tell you.
