Kodac, having to earn a living does
wonder to keep our mouths in line.

Pat, I need to keep that in mind.
Most times I am so taken aback at the rude questions that are asked that I tend to flounder as as not to say what comes immediately to mind. Thanks for reading.

Thoughts better left unspoken...

Working in retail gives me loads of opportunities to have nasty thoughts running rampant though my brain. I find it remarkably hard to bite my tongue and not spew out everything I'm thinking..........good thing that I dont or I wouldnt have a job....

The best answer to a nosy question
is another question.  "Why do you ask?"  or, if they're particularly rude and insensitive, "What could possibly make you think this is any concern of yours?"

Thank you Joe,

You got that right. I would have throttled her if I could have - rude so and so that she is. Now I'm wondering what she'd say if I'd told her to mind her own business. But then, the habits of a lifetime are so hard to break. I was brought up not to be rude to my elders and I have to be pushed very far to do so.  I think people like her capitalize on this aspect of our culture.

TIMMY, yes, I find that to be so particularly with older ladies.
Nothing will stand in their way - except maybe expletives and even then, I wonder....

Blackcat, now those eyes were wandering far.
Under your deck! and no offer to at least pay you for what you must have bought.  Some people do have some nerve.

Cass, that can and does happen when

you're not paying attention.  You too far in by the time you realize how out of depth you've gotten.

Word.smith
Really enjoyed your last 2 posts. Both have been very entertaining reads. I know you wanted to strangle that woman when she kept inquiring about your new wig. LOL And, just as Timmy commented. . , being rude to these people doesn't work at all. It DOES go right over their heads.

I have found that being rude to these types of people usually goes right over their head

There's nothing worse than a nosey neighbor.
A couple weeks ago, mine asked me, "Hey, are you going to use that slate you have piled up under your deck?  If not, I'll take it?"  ???  Are you kidding me?  I have about 10 pieces of patio slate under my deck that was leftover when I fixed the walkway.   The nerve of some people never ceases to amaze me.

I'm sort of naive when it comes to these inquisitive people. I tend to answer them without thinking, then they ask more, I answer more and suddenly I realise I've been pulled into a conversation I never wanted!

Life throws us all types, I guess!

HG, Inquisitiveness might not be such a bad thing...
in small doses.  It's seeking out knowledge eagerly, but then the second definition is prying.  Oops!

I can remember being taken totally off-gaurd ( nothing new for me)  I said something like > I still buy my make-up at the drug store but I suppose I will have to attend one of those parties sometime down the road.  Your neigbor is JUST RUDE also.. Maybe Jealous.

There's inquisitive, and then there's just plain nosy....

Medusa, that is true enough..

no class...totally clueless!

Definitely Quirky!

I wouldn't ask anyone that, not to mention from across the street. If you choose to tell me, then that's another thing, but to ask.....not cool! No

Bright, I would have sent her back
down the driveway with a withering look, no matter how badly it made me feel...D'you remember what you said?

Hi Ms. word.smith...I agree with Ms. Quirky...It's conversation to them...
How freakin' rude can some people be?! Is that a wig? Oh, for goodness sakes. You gave her a sharp answer. I think some people simply lack class.

posted by MedusaNextDoor on August 26, 2005 at 1:44 PM | link to this | reply

I don't think most of them see it that way...they probably think they are just making conversation...but asking about the wig---that was rude!!

Hi.... I had one of those neighbors.. She knocked on my door one day and I swear these were her words... " I was wondering since your getting older and have a few wrinkles, would you attend a make-up party.. if I decide to have it?"

Taps, thankfully we don't have to answer everything that's

asked of us.   I have a deep aversion to being questioned. I'm a very private person and find it offensive that people ask some of the questions they do and yeah answering with a question does stop all but the most determined interrogators.

posted by word.smith on August 26, 2005 at 10:08 AM | link to this | reply

Yes, more often than not, people who probe thoughtlessly

are rude. Ask me anything, in an unintrusive, considered manner and I will respond; may not answer your question but I won't be annoyed. I always avoid/ ignore the demanding, in your face types though.

I have found over the years that I have a tendency to glibness.
Someone asks me a dumb question or says something that irks me, and the old sarcastic overdrive cranks up. It's not really helpful to the situation, but damn, it sometimes makes me feel real good.

I'm evil. So sue me...

word.smith, this kind of person surely does rub me the wrong way.   When I was younger I felt that I had to answer every question that was asked of me but I hated it.  I finally realized that the problem was theirs and I began to answer the questions with questions, such as, "Now why on earth would you want to know that?"     Although some people are so far gone with it that doesn't even faze them.  I especially hated it when gossips would ask me personal questions about joint acquaintences.

It's not me..no..
..at least I hope it isn't! i'm shy by nature and it amazes me the dumb things people say...almost to hear themselves speak! It's like they feel it's their place in life to flap their gums constantly....I go out of my way to avoid people like that...or I'll just give them a "hmmm.."
