Thanks, ARGUS. The former information I actually knew; I was
going for expediency.  However, I didn't know the bit about the renaming effort by the Romans or the history of the name (somehow, with all the literature I have read about the MidEast, biblical times, Roman history, all the wars, etc., I never gleaned that fact.)  Appreciate the lesson and feel free to enlighten me at any time.  I enjoy it.  I find ignorance nowhere near the bliss its reputation offers.

Good analysis, saul.

One small correction if you permit-- the 'millenia-old confrontation' was not between Jews and Palestinians, it was between Jews and Arabs. The term 'Palestinian' until very recently INCLUDED: Arabs, Jews, Christians, Bahais, Beduins, and others living in that region. For example, the Palestine Philarmonic Orchestra was entirely Jewish.

There was never a Palestinian people with one sole ethnicity. The term 'Palestine' was invented by Roman mapmakers (after the Philistines who had landed there at one time) in part to obliterate any reference to Israel, Judea, Samaria, or other place names of the Jews whom the Romans had defeated in war.

Agreed, Tapsel-T. A very unfortunate set of circumstances for some very
passionate and intelligent peoples.

saul_relative, I am afraid that they will never be enough and that it is not at all fixable.
