Asarim, read again
The Inquisition was instituted to respond to those who did not adhere to the Church's doctrine.  Waldenses, Albigenses, others.  Tens of thousands were killed, who knows how many tortured and forced to recant -- Jews were "converted" in this manner.
I guess historians have it wrong.

Asarim knows the Inquisition existed and Torquemada was a main player.
Asarim knows the Inquisition existed and Torquemada the main player but in fact the Inquisition was not as terrible as it has been portrayed through history. Basically they would ride through towns and set up quick trials against "witches" and the "possessed" and in extreme cases gave the death penalty. Usually by burning them in the main square. Documentation is scarce but in Madrid and Toledo few accounts were actually reported. More people died at bull fights. Remember, we are talking 1400-1700 and the average lifetime was 30 years. Now if you want to pass judgment against the Catholic Church then also consider the good things it did in educating most of Latin America and helping the needy. Think of all the Nuns around the world that work in hospitals, etc. www.asarim.com

Thanks for the refresher course.

Looks like you know a lot about the inquisition and have a healthy view of such things. Religious inhumanity and intolerance can be found riddling history. The Catholic fanatics forcing the American Indians, the Anglicans against the gays, etc, etc. But from the point of view of the oppressor, it’s not to defile but to save. They just simply want everyone to enjoy the benefits that they are sure to be waiting in heaven. Nice job, a new fan. Zarrothepaun alpha

Xeno -
It's interesting how historical facts look based on your point of view. And, as the old saying goes, those who win get to write the history.
