Trust me, If I had the time (or the money to pay my bills while I was absent from work). I would have a my own little group camped out on the yard of the president. Only it would be in support of the brave people willing to sacrifice their own lives to defend our freedom. No one likes war, but it has to be done, do they have a clue as to where we would be and what would be going on in this country if we didn't fight for ourselves. My heart goes out to Cindy for her lose, but ending this war before that country and our country is safe would mean her son sacrifieced his life for nothing.

Thanks for taking the time to read and to comment.  I'll be very honest at this point, I am very, very happy and don't want to ruin that by debating politics.  I'll stand by my orginal statement that I know what the soldiers I have spoken with have said.  For me that is where my debate begins and ends.  I apreciate the time and thought you put into your comments and you make some valid points, at this time I am simply choosing to agree to disagree.

Thanks Again

I know several young people in Iraq

and while I respect their choice and their bravery, I fear for them. I've corresponded with them and it is clear they are in harm's way - but they made the decision to be there as soldiers, that I can't dispute.

However..there are deeper issues concerning this war from an anti-war viewpoint (and not all anti-war citizens engage in hateful, ignorant rhetoric - there are rude, insane people in both camps)...If spreading freedom was the real reason, why did the administration whip up fear about WMD? Why wasn't the truth of the matter presented from day one; in a democracy being led to war on false pretenses should be cause for great alarm. And this - if Iraq becomes a theocracy where women's rights cease to exist, does that not negate the whole effort of "spreading freedom"? You could say if this is what the majority of Iraqis want, then it is a form of democracy, but how does that justify forcing the minority, whose numbers would still be considerable, under a veil of lost freedoms and rights?

Wishing you and your husband the very best.

I understood it all but the Captain Kirk reference...LOL!  I have never watched Star Trek LOL!

Are they ready...I don't know, but hopefully when all is said and done that will be their choice.

I'm glad you wrote about your viewpoint. Many signed up and never thought that there would be another war-thinking that it was outdated. But, they took the check/benefits. I don't know if Iraq is ready for 'our type' government. I liked what Captain Kirk followed-The Prime Directive. Do not interfere. Are they ready? Will it mean anything?

While I appreciate your feelings on this, what I will say is "I" was not the one calling a soldiers wife a "stupid cunt": that was the peaceful group.

Why did I feel the need to counter this?  Because my husband is a soldier and he along with the others need to see that some people DO stand behind them.

I realize that not all are like the the young man I encountered...but as often as others counter this...we are also countered.  That is one of the beautiful things about this country we all have the right to take a stand.

It saddens me that you felt you had to counter a peace vigil ...
this is a democracy, no? Since only about 38% of the public actually support the war now, why does it bother so many that people are starting to voice their opposition to a meaningless conflict? You stated the reasons why we are in Iraq. That wasn't the justification for the war then, and not one American soldier should have to die for Iraq's self-determination. As for fighting the terrorists there, well, that's just a standard nonsensical response. Our presence in Iraq is breeding terrorists.

I agree with you in theory.  I believe where the politics are concerned there is alot we will NEVER know.  I know what my troops believe and pray for...for me, that is whom I stand behind.  As for the politics...ever seen the green emoticon on yahoo?  LOL!  Thanks so much for your thoughts, I don't disagree with you, I'll be honest, I truly don't know because I really do not follow the news these days...for obvious reasons.

we should respect the soldiers but hate the war. any war.

I would shake each and every soldier's hand if I could.  That's whether I believe in this war or not.  The war wasn't their choice.  Yes, they joined voluntarily, but from there they follow orders and serve our country without question.  That deserves to be held in the highest regard in my book.

I do not care for this war, too,
however, I do understand the necessity of it. The thing I really hate about it is that it is being portrayed as a war to spread freedom and to free the people of Iraq. Unfortunately, I don't really think that is what the war is about. ., and we probably know know the reeeeal reason for another 30 years.

So you want us to come to HELL for that? OKAY!!

I believe we must have faith in those who are on the ground, in control, and of course our leaders. That said, if we pull out because of this womans protests, the intrastructure ( what there is of it) would crumble within a short time frame. Their Constitution is young, and yet untested. We should not leave for any other reason than the mission has been completed. This woman is out of control!

Military Wifey

I think of everyone in Washington I'd have to agree with John McCain. He feels that if we're going to finish what we started in Iraq, we need to just do it and do it right. I despise every single war that has ever taken place, but the fact is, here we are. Our soldiers have a job to do, and to say that we should pull out or not send more troops over to get the job done is a sin against them. It would have been better if Bush had listened to Powell in the first place, but oh well, that's past. Let's go in there with everything we need to get this job done. Let's just do it.

I would be filing for a divorce too.  She claims she wants to know what happened.  Truth be told, more often than not his fellow soldiers would have told her the truth.  Now, she will never get that because there is no way they will ever trust her.  I am also left to ask why NOW?  Casey was lost over a year ago.  Either way, it's a shame this is what he will be remembered for.

posted by Bel_ on August 18, 2005 at 9:04 AM | link to this | reply

Ren...

don't apologize for speaking the truth! I said it years ago on national television (yes, I was on national television) that our military is all-volunteer and needs to stay that way for the same reasons you just cited. A few years ago soldiers refused the anthrax vaccination because it posed a small percentage of lethal threat to those allergic to the injection. Well, gee, I wonder how many of those "soldiers" would have refused deployment to theater because such deployments pose a small percentage of lethality?

Don't apologize for being rights. Sheehan needs to apologize for exploiting her son's courageous sacrifice for her own political agenda. She's just repugnant.

MIL--I wondered that this morining as I saw CNN covering her impending
divorce.  I think maybe she's taken this grief thing to a new level, and isn't concerned about her son's legacy or her hubby.  I did hear that's why he filed for divorce, btw.

What troubles me the most with her actions is I am left to wonder if this is what her son would have wanted his legacy to be?  From all I have read Casey was a soldier, heart and soul.  It saddens me that his valor has been forgotten in all of this.

FINALLY, someone says what I've been thinking all along. Her son went
in VOLUNTARILY, people.  No one tied his hands behind his back.  And I'm not sure, but I'd be willing to guess that he went in AFTER 9/11 and knew damn well that he had a good chance of going to war.  And to those who just go in for an education, do they not know that the trade-off for the government-funded education is going to war when needed?  Sorry, but not much sympathy here--even for her.  Sure, I'm sad she lost a son.  But he signed up knowing the possibilities.  Get over it.  (sorry, it's hot and I'm cranky).  :-)

Because we made the choice to remain peaceful at all times.  It about killed the soldier standing behind me.  he started to speak up when the police officer arrived.  I asked the soldier to please not say anything at that time.
