You are exactly right, we do have the government we deserve. When less than fifty percent of the elegible electoret goes to the polls, when less than twenty-five percent of the fifty percent elect a president, and it's called a land slide, we will continue down the same path.
Personal freedom, civil liberties, have been on the decline since the first Congress after ratification. The reality is, if you are not doing anything wrong, for the most part, you can, in fact, do anything you want. Actually, in this country, or any other for that matter, you can do anything you want, as long as you are willing to suffer the consiquence of your action. The problem I see is, folks want to do anything they want, right or wrong, legal or illegal, without suffering the consiquence. That is chaos, and personally, I would rather not see the United States fall into chaos.
