Open the floodgate of words! For formal work, we try so hard to conform that it may feel stifled.

Just spew forth!
Let it all out! I'm finding the same competition in my writing life. I write for clients to make money, yet yearn to get the other stuff out. It's often difficult to change hats, but I'm slowly but surely getting there. I think it's importantly to begin to simply write as often as you can. Meaning, don't force yourself to write any certain thing, just see what comes out! As always, I love reading what does!

MayB,
I am a beginner. I am learning so much each day by simply reading. I have sold a few articles, and I am happy with that. It does seem though that the pieces that I am most happy with are pieces that didn't feel like "work" to write. I enjoy your posts, and look forward to reading and learning more.
Go Easy,

It's hard to comment properly when I don't write myself anymore.
And, I was never an author. So consider youjr posts without a comment from me to be read and mulled and appreciated, as it probably is by others who don't toss in their two cents's worth.
Be that as it may (harumph), it seems to me that outpouring is what one cannot do in professional writing, that everything has to be pared down and focused.

It's true that the less effort you put into how much you're going to make, and the more work you put into the quality of it, you'll be rewarded. I've noticed the blogs where I've paid closer attention to making it good get read a lot more than the ones I post just to get clicks.
