Great new blog Damon
A beacon of light in dark times. And a fascinating first post. My interest in the Mayan calendar was prompted in a very strange way a couple of years ago. I haven't had much time to pursue it, but I think it is telling us something vital. Will be following this blog.

...well, I'm not sure you'll find out what happens, as such. But you will find out what I believe will happen - and I may be right!
Cheers, m'dear!

See, I knew there was a fellow optimist in there somewhere...
and indications so far make me believe that optimist is as convincing as the critic (and both roles are important).
I think one way to increase peace is to stress the importance -- and validity -- of treating people as individuals rather than peoples, nations or religions.
That way, you can despise what one person or group within a nation or faith does -- even if it's the dominant group -- without saying "just nuke 'em all".
Of course, only by living together and actually sharing one another's experiences, positive and negative, can we cultivate the compassion and sense of universal human dignity that would suffice for a consensus to treat everyone equally and well.
Paradoxically, this means collectivizing a lot of human experience, thinking of ourselves as bound to our community -- its joys and woes -- even as we de-emphasize community at the macro level and stress individualism to prevent collective judgment and punishment.
In other words, treat people as individual cases when evaluating behavior, but treat other people's joys and pains as our own to strengthen communal bonds.
I have more on this -- such as an argument why following the Golden Rule is better than the alternative even if one's neighbors refuse to do the same.
I'm really psyched (is that word in use anymore?) about this thread. Keep it up!

Can't wait to read the rest.
I've always been amazed at the Mayan Civilization too and had heard about their predictions.
