I've always thought it was
a ridiculous waste of money. Especially when their are so many REAL problems that money could be applied to toward social problems in our country.

It's...
...the madness of man.
See, the shuttle fleet is due to be scrapped in 2010 - a good few years too late, according to some space analysts. They're old and knackered NOW!
However, scrapping them now is not an option. Why? Because some very powerful people have set themselves the task of building the International Space Station. This is nowhere near finished, yet the budget has leapt up, and now stands at over $100 BILLION!!! (Money that could be better spent elsewhere, do you think?)
The only way to get that white elephant built is by using the shuttles, hence the rush back up again. However, finishing the space station in less than five years is a very tall order indeed.
My prediction? Either the space station will be scrapped and never finished, or the shuttles will have their service extended beyond 2012, leading to more disasters and fatalities.
