Harry Potter promotes reading and that promotes thinking, and the church is very much afraid of such things. If the common people had been literate five hundred years ago, the church might not have been able to hold onto any power this long.
So I can very much see why anything that promotes literacy scares religious leaders to know end. People might start thinking and that would lead to thinking for themselves. Oh the horrors of it all.
