Funny...
...you should ask, Pat - I'm on the verge of launching a new blog on just that theme!

Thanks for confirming the need for one!

We are into appeasement and compromise, and it sucks! That's my point. It sucks whether justified by liberals or conservatives, whether for a perverse tolerance (of intolerant cultural norms) or for business interests.

The only problem with it is that terror isn't an adjective, but the gist of it is still greatnes!

malcom...
...thanks for your heartfelt comment.

The parallel with "the troubles" are obvious, but have you noticed how rarely they are drawn now, how rarely they are aired? I think it's because ireland does not fit with the fear-story of today. The current story began on 9/11 - anything before that (apart from spurious parallels to WWII) are not really allowed.

Cheers!

Dylan...
...if we're not into appeasement and compromise, how come we've been doing so much business with Saudi Arabia for so many years? Selling them arms, pumping in money and troops, all the while turning a blind eye to womens rights abuses, human rights abuses and so on?

Hmmmm...

Thanks for reading.

...indeed, Edgeware Road is in the midst of a major Muslim community.

Naive? It would be nice to think that, but personally, I don't believe it. there's too much manipulation going on to believe in naivity.

Thanks for reading.

It didn't work in Ireland
How many years did we suffer terrorist outrages in the name of the IRA, INLA and various other acronyms, curiously called splinters. Troops in the North did nothing to stop atrocities and neither did 'vigilance' or 'resiliance' in London when we faced constant security alerts and somehow missed the main events. Sometimes you have to revert to military might, sometimes you have to really make sanctions work without allowing your favourite capitalists in the back door and thus wrecking any chance of their success, and sometimes you can give the orders just a little too quickly. Iraq is a Bush family affair. Everybody knows that, and Ms Rice should be in the West Wing as an unpopular, dysfunctional nothing that Josh and Toby quickly expose. Unfortunately it's not a TV movie (despite the best efforts of the BBC), it's real, and how many families in our country this weekend are really sympathetic to Blair or Bush expressions of sympathy?

Correction: "Sorry if my presumption was wrong."

They might have valid reasons for hating our governments,

and perhaps for feeling negatively toward us as well, and it's not because we are free, but it's clear that some of them have strong theological objections to our freedoms, which call for the annihilation of those who espouse these freedoms.

If they hate me because my government has supported Israeli incursions onto Palestinian land, okay, I'll tell my government to stop supporting those actions. But that won't be enough for Al Qaeda -- to them, the very existence of Israel is an incursion on Palestinian land. Sorry, I will not cause them to stop hating me over that, and I would hope you would not either.

We should not compromise on the rights of women or religious minorities or any of the other groups that the Wahhabists wish to subjugate or kill. Maybe we can't defeat them with guns -- but we can't appease them (or shouldn't, anyway) by compromising with their sexist and theocratic ideas either.

Again, those who hate the hypocrisy of our government's supporting repressive governments have a point; I've written that in this space before. But those who hate the genuine imposition of our infidel values can kiss my...liberated woman.

Was it in poor taste to get back into the politics of it so soon after the attacks? You did, so I figure it must be okay by you. Sorry I my presumption was wrong.

What can I say, Damon?
You agree with everything I believe about T.W.O. T. Thus, you must be brilliant. Thanks, Hemlocker

"How can you declare war on an adjective?"  Oh my god, that was brilliant! And I'd like an answer to that question as well.  Hope you guys are okay over there.  The English are certainly a sensible, resilient lot!

The discussion about "winning" the war on terror is naive and sells a lie to people. The politicians are disingenous to make such promises but I guess they tell people what they think they want to hear/
It is also disturbing about the amount of anti-Islam propoganda. If anyone looks closely at where those explosions occurred they will see how many Muslims are part of those communities. People see things as so black and white perhaps because reality is so complex.
