It was . . . .
And added to the original atmosphere, which was largely methane. Those early farts, by the way, from one-celled creatures, are scientifically referred to as fartlets.

yes we do need to trace the history of flatulence
back through the one-celled organisms
and why wasn't it used as propulsion through the water?

well I was thinking the same

but I thought maybe we'd trace the history backwards.

but the the question arises . . .

if it's not animal flatulence (do reptiles or birds or fish fart?) (do plants fart?) or even that of living matter, then . . .

so here's the question:

is it a fart or a burp?

or maybe something else.

interesting that we might be the product (or byproduct) of a long chain of farts . . . ?

Or even <DRUM ROLL>
. . . . The Big Bang could have been a Cosmic Fart!

well -- that's a deep subject
we can take this back even further in time.
so what would you consider Old Faithful?
and the bubbles in hot springs or the La Brea Tar Pits?
volcanoes?
are they burps or farts or some other expiation?
