- Go to IT'S JULY 4: BUT THESE PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN GIVEN INDEPENDENCE.
I'm embarassed to be an American...
This country was hijacked a long time ago by the rich and powerful. They use that money to manipulate the people here, that love to wave the flag, and tell you how "free" they are. If you don't think people in the U.S. are easily manipulated, then why are millions spent on TV campaign ads.
The U.S. gained it's power after WWII. Europe was leveled (set back) after the war. Now, we've been on top so long we've gotten fat, lazy, and stupid. If you don't believe that, then visit any of your popular NASCAR races, or look at our heroes, like Paris Hilton. Or buy an American car. Buy a Grand Am, I dare you to!
The U.S. is in for a rude awakening, and our political policies of bombing the hell out of countries like Iraq, have bred a new generation of terrorists that will be with us for the rest of our lives.
Bush loves this. Because he can point to terrorism and say, "SEE! You do need me." When in fact, our government can't do a damn thing about terrorism and has does nothing but bungle operations since it began. (See Watergate, Bay of Pigs, Cuban missile crisis, Noriega, Native Americans...) Read the 9/11 Commision report. Our gov. is nothing more than a bungling bunch stooges that gets nothing right, and has no problem sending our troops off on mis-information wars to slaughter and be-slaughtered.
If I could, I would move to Canada.

FIrst of all the UN has their own agenda, and if the US had not backed out, we would be the next third world country. Would you really wish that devestation on anyone???? Second of all, do you know all the offenses the queen committed against the people that came here? The list is an arm's length. Then you have the nerve to say that we shouldn't have been given independence. Our men fought the trained British troops with nothing but muskets, and you still have the nerve to say we shouldn't have been given independence. Limey if you are going to be a jackass, at least research it first so you can give an informed opinion and not this type of crappola.

Limey:
thank you for responding to each of my points. I am all for strengthening the U.N., but the idea that it is a uniformly positive force in world affairs is what I dispute. If the U.N. is to have real authority, it will have to rise to the occasion to stop crises like those in Bosnia and today in Sudan, and it will need from the U.S. the support in "hard power" that many of its member nations so often deprecate, for it will be necessary to fight the perpetrators of genocide and other serious human rights violations.
To me, there is no more important role for international law than that. I will stand by the U.N. firmly whenever it takes as many actions as it writes resolutions. Similarly, I will criticize my own government when it abuses its power -- as it has done more than just a few times since Mr. Bush came to power, prompting me to sign a petition for his impeachment.

Pro-America Readers...UNITE!
Limey is an intelligent man. He really is. No, quit laughing, REALLY. He pastes alot of facts up here about "stereo-typical" America, as well as, where the evolution of "American Politics" has left our GREAT nation. So let me post a fact about Limey:
A.) He's an expert at many things: posting facts, breaking copyright laws, and "stirring the pot."
B.) He's an expert "mind-manipulator". Bravo, Limey...you do have a way of reeling us American readers in via a very American-Like, Bait and Switch method.
C.) Every time American's read one of his posts - American dollars, dirty and vulnerable as they may be, are thrown into the pocket of an Anti-American, who claims to live in Great Brittain.
HMMM...America...what's wrong with this picture?

For someone who professes to have an open mind I am disappointed by your comment and reluctance to see the other side.
However, allow me to respond to the points you raise - (my statements in brackets):
It was when we were Great Britain's subject that we pillaged, displaced and murdered native Americans. (And afterwards, too, as you know full well).
Great Britain has at least as bad a history of being involved in injustice against natives and in slavery. (That I would accept to a certain degree. But this blog is about America. Moreover, in simple terms, two wrongs don't make a right).
And no, we will not agree to live by U.N. rules until those rules are reasonable. The U.N. peacekeeping team that stood by and watched as thousands were massacred in Sbrenica is not the kind of thing we will emulate. (Fine - then help make the UN rules "reasonable" - as you put it. Choosing only to adhere to those rules thato suits her, America plays fast and loose with the UN. This fine organisation which, after all, America established needs strengthening - not undermining)).
It was when the U.S. got involved with the N.A.T.O. intervention that the killing stopped. The U.N. didn't do anything because some of them didn't want action taken against Milosevic. (See above).
The U.N. honors and gives high posts to nations that abuse human rights as a rule and do not permit even the most basic of civil and political liberties. (This has happened on occasion, but then America acting unilaterally has done much the same thing).
Until that changes, the good old independent U. S. of A. will not deliver itself into the U.N.'s arms, nor should we. (I would urge you to encourage America to improve and strengthen the UN, not usurp its authority).
I am proud of my country, for all its faults, and I celebrate this Independence Day without hesitation! (Remember, pride comes before a fall - and pride, of course, is a sin).

If you wish to be pedantic, so be it. The facts are these:
In April 1782, the British House of Commons voted to end the war with its American colonies. On February 4, 1783 Great Britain formally declared that it would cease hostilities in North America.
I notice you state that I do not represent the mainstream of British thought in relation to America and Americans - which I find astonishing. Could you kindly provide evidence to support your claim?

I don't know whether you have received an education, but allow me to answer your queries in a style of English I'm sure you'll be able to understand.
The name Yank: I am aware of its origins, definition and distinctions. Like many, I use it as shorthand - in total defiance of Southerners
Now here's my response to your various points:
1. Granted, there are some things about my country that don't exactly make me beam with pride (as I am anti-Bush and against any "war for freedom") but may I remind you that Mr. Tony Blair - your Prime Minister - hangs on every word Bush says. (Sad but true. You see, Blair hopes a little of Bush's power will rub off on him - but, of course, it won't. Blair, you will be aware, is a liar. I do not support him).
2.I don't know your level of education or awareness in general, but I would like to know if you have ever heard of Polybius and read about his theory about the cycles of power. Ergo: a nation will rise, become strong and dominant with power and wealth to then only start to decline while another nation will start to dominate. I bet you wouldn't have thought of your old Empire as tacky when they were invading and dominating (often violently) their ex-territories, would you? (Yes, I am familiar with Polybius and his influence on early Americans. As for the British Empire, I'm sure I would have been among the millions who opposed its expansion and methods of exploitation. And by the way, a classical education is not unknown here: if you recall, our universities were founded a little ahead of yours).
3. America wasn't granted independence, it fought for it and your butts were kicked (How come Horatio Nelson gets remembered in your history books but Cornwallis doesn't? hmmmmmm...). Simple as that. We may have all been dominated by the British once but remember the Brits were all Roman once (Just read up on things like the foundation and early history of London, Bath, and Hadrian's Wall among other things...you might be in for a shocker). (America's independence - see my comment to JJ. About British history you make the strangest assumptions. Charles, Earl Cornwallis, of Suffolk, is well as the Briton who lost America. As to the rest, why is it you believe I'm unaware of my own country's past? Extraordinary).
4. You sound very disgruntled, just like that mad Hannover George III who couldn't fathom the defeat. Maybe you think the current line of royal successors is all wrong....maybe if the House of Hannover descendant Ernst August, Caroline of Monaco's husband, who is a violent drunk with a few loose screws ( just like his ancestor), were on the throne today...who knows...you'd probably be staking a claim to get us back. (What point are you trying to make? My aim is quite straightforward, and always has been. It is this: America needs to change - for the better. Read my posts - and no, they are not all cut and paste, although I make no apology for using this method if and when it suits my purpose - and you will understand).
5. Last but not least, may I remind you that it was a Yank who gave birth to your greatest statesman: Lady Jenny Jerome, Winston Churchill's mother, was born in Brooklyn, New York. (Well, I'm well known for being extremely reasonable, as you may have heard. So I will not holdh is American connection against Winston - after all, it wasn't the poor man's fault, now was it?).
Have a great day (Thank you, I will - and enjoy your celebrations) don't get too upset, don't drink too much tea, and, in keeping with what the late great John Lennon once sang: Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun, if the sun don't come you get your tan from standing in the English rain...
PS Sicily? Are you a Mafia godfather?

and they always warn their youth about sending them to "the Americas with all the criminals." LOL
I am glad for our Independence...we actually don't have enough of it, if you ask me.

Limey,
If your history books have not been rewritten, you will discover that we were not ''given'' our independence. I'm sure it's quite an embarassment to Britain, and even more so to you, but we had to throw out tyrants for our independence.
I thought we were done with them, but here you are, delivering negativity, sniveling, and whining from across the sea. Your political stands become quite boring upon enduring a certain amount of repetition. It seems too much a waste when the same crap is available locally.
You may be under the illusion that you represent the mainstream of British thought, but it gives me great pleasure to know that you do not. The only pressing question that I have come to wonder at is how you can mislead yourself into such inaccurate thoughts.
