You mistake "the U.S." for "mankind". No seriously, in england or spain I never had those problems. Your society is screwed up. I advise you to get out, go to canada or spain or even china... anywhere really, except perhaps some of those poverty-stricken/religious-fundamentalist middle-eastern/african countries. Really. I feel sorry for you guys.

Yep...

I dropped the first week of 11th grade in the GATE program with like a 2.2 GPA...I was bored.

But you can discipline your kids, and you can teach them to love reading and learning stuff. I just tell Jaime that anytime he thinks I'm being too hard on him, he can go ahead and call CPS - doesn't usually require smacking, but it has been known to happen when he does. Fuck the state.

Hacker, really the only thing I can say is that there are good points
and bad points to everything. It was not all that long ago that children here were expected to work ASAP. They still are in some places... Kids here are spoiled rotten today. But at least they live through it and they _have_ a childhood. People say we force them to grow up too early. Huh?  It's all just a mess of contradictions.

Hacker,

How nice to see you online.  Oh, God, I won't bore you with too many personal details, but suffice it to say, that I lived with one very paranoid invidual, who I am trying to wrap my mind around enough to get all her quirks and my quirks into a story: anyway, she devoted her life 24/7 to unmasking the conspiracy behind the world government, which reduced to a small Mongolian Jewish sect, who planted Lenin to spread Communism which has now mutated into Communitarianism, espoused in the Hegelian Marxist Dialectic. Apparently, the dialectic is to always pit two groups against each other: liberals, v. conservatives, blacks v. whites, men v. women, so as to divert us from the real picture of totalitarian police state rising. The aim is to discredit the United States and the US government so badly that the world will beg to have us turned over to UN control.  There's more.

I believed enough and couldn't dispute her theory so that I go sucked into this paranoid world while living with her and her daughter in a horrible, dark basement apartment. I was told there was a room upstairs in the attic so full of evil, no one could stand to be there. I don't know, I do know that I had a psychotic episode there that made me very violent, I was so angry at her, that I scare myself. If there is such a thing as evil, I certainly felt that it would live there.  They left, thank God, and except for a few emails, our friendship is over.

Anyway, I woke every morning to hear the latest dismal installment of world news, the war, and everything.  What I have since come to believe is that these are the end times, it's beyond my control, human nature without acknowledging and welcoming the spirit of God, completely selfish, egotistical and brutal, and that this world is not my home, but I have a mission to fulfill: to love my neighbor, literally, the person right next to me.  That's what I can do and the rest is out of my hands.  So, that's why I stopped reading the news.

Mary

Hehe, I do need to chill out, don't I? This kind of stuff just drives me nuts. Ugh. Le sigh. At least I don't think it will all come crashing down in my life time. But hey, maybe I should think about that more. It just might.

Ack! But I shouldn't think about it now! Time to relax. Yeah.

Unid'd Hacker,

Mmmhmm.  I agree with you completely, and you have a much better inside scoop on the state of high schools today that I do, since it's been more than a few years.  I slid by, too, basically because my family had so many other problems, reading was an escape. But that's beside the point, or maybe that is the point: you said nobody gives a shit.  That may be it in a nutshell. Unless parents actively are involved in the day to day education of their children, interact with them, care about their education, then the kids rapidly figure out that every is just talk, and how to get by on a smile and a handshake.

Under the surface of polite correctness is a total icy indifference.  So, I'd rather the uncorrectness of overzealous but well-meaning common sense approach.  However, before you write humanity off completely, maybe you should take a break from the news. I have, I couldn't stand the insanity either, it messed with my head too much.  Now, I just try to find real people with real brains, like yourself.  Chill out, would you?
