Danceswithwords...Count  the number of words in one inch of  a column. Multiply by the number of inches requested for your piece. That's how many words you'll need. (Note: column widths vary, so it's good to know at least the approximate width of column to be used for your piece. No need to sweat it. A few words over or under is quite o.k.)

I haven't written for a daily, but I've launched newspapers, and written

for others.  Way back in high school, I was taught that a column inch is in the neighborhood of 35 words.  Trust me, that's just a guide.  I used to measure headlines out based on what the printer gave as guidelines and it varied so much.  It's based on the font being used.  Some fonts (the lettering used) are spaced closely together, while others have lots of space in between letters.

The 35 per column inch is a good rule as a general.  If you want to look in terms of typed copy, most comes out in Times New Roman which is very standard newspaper type. You generally type a newspaper article double spaced with standard margins.  Each page equals about 250 words.  I still use that standard.  Four pages = 1,000 words.

I hope that helps.

danceswithwords,
Good luck. Have a nice trip. That could be the narrow column, running 25" down. Don't know the width of the column.

Good Luck. You're doing pretty good with your writing these days. Great job.
