No, you didn't say anything about pedophilia -- that is why I was dismayed to see that direction taken in the response posts. I, too, am not sure there is a link between celibacy and homosexuality but I think there might be one between that particular structural dictate of the Catholic Church and the prevalence of homosexuality among priests. If I am unattracted to women and have no desire to get married ever (and may not even be fully self-aware yet regarding my own sexuality) then a requirement to vow celibacy and never marry might seem like a palatable life choice. Actually, I don't really know as much about it as I should if I am going to spout off about it. Didn't you say that 20% of priests are gay? That leaves 80% that aren't. I guess I just hate to see anyone forced to deny who they are to serve God. Thorny, thorny issues. Thanks for getting us talking and me thinking about these issues...

Woo hoo, I have a new nickname
So I'm JaneThePain now, eh? Glad to be such a thorn in your side.
And now you're blaming America for the "popularization" of homosexuality? I absolutely do not condone the lifestyle, but must say I think your accusation is pushing it a bit. Heck, they're coming out of countless closets all over the world, and have been doing so for decades.
Ya know Limey, I think you could blame America for one problem on Monday, and then on Tuesday blame us for the complete antithesis of the same problem. You could care less about the issue/problem/grievance (etc). What seems to give you the most pleasure is pointing the finger at America and blaming this country for every imaginable problem you can think of.
How about taking a little Lithium with your morning tea. It might even out your moods and make you feel better.

Thank you.
First, I don't think I mentioned paedophilia.
Second, this post isn't exclusively about Catholic priests. And whether there's a connnection between celibacy and homosexuality I'm not sure.
Now, see of my post of today which expands on this issue.

First, when did the comments on homosexuality begin to morph so easily into comments on pedophilia? Wow! Are we really going to engage in the despicable (in my opinion) or at the very least logically suspect act of linking or even associating the two? I thught we were much more enlightened now.
Second, while I am not fully comfortable with the tone taken in this post, I do think this is a very important issue. For the record, I couldn't care less what the sexual orientation of my spiritual leader is, but maybe that is why I have very little to do with organized religion. I feel sadness for the Catholic Church mostly because I feel that asking preists to take a vow of celibacy has little if anything to do with thier commitment to the church or their God and even less to do with their abilities as a spiritual leader. Rampant homosexuality in the Catholic Church is a direct result of the vow of celibacy. Those individuals who may be inspired leaders and devout Catholics but unwilling to take the vow simply will not enter the priesthood. Thus, it is not hard to imagine that the pool of candidates easily becomes one that is disproportionately made up of gay men. And so ironic too. How sad for these individuals to struggle on such a constant basis with their own identies as men and as priests.

Ok, Limey:
I have told you countless times how brilliant you are. I've even shared a guacamole recipe with you. But I have to BEG you to read my posts. Don't you get what I am trying to say in any of my compositions, here? I haven't even earned a George Bush dollar yet. You listen Ms N all day long. I like her stuff, too, but I'm bloody disappointed. Burly is very political, but he still digs my writing. Enough for now, love.

What, no pedophiles in the Uk?
You are saying that this act is limited to Americans, and that is total bullshit! Pedophilia is not limited to any race, sex or country. How shallow of you to assume that it is exclusively an American problem.
Dublin — The Roman Catholic Church in Ireland has agreed to a landmark $110-million (U.S) payment to Irish children sexually abused by its clergy over decades. Sex abuse campaigners and opposition lawmakers brand the offer as inadequate. The deal late Wednesday was designed to conclude a 10-year struggle by the church in this predominantly Catholic nation to overcome sex scandals going back to the 1940s. More than 20 priests, brothers and nuns have already been convicted of molesting children, with much of the abuse taking place in state-funded, church-run schools."
Tolkien son accused of sex abuse. LONDON: The eldest son of J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings, has been questioned by police over allegations that he sexually abused boys while working as a priest. Officials will assess whether to press formal charges against the retired Roman Catholic priest.
LONDON – According to reports, British authorities are becoming overwhelmed by the growing caseload of child porn surfers as the result of an ongoing web sting and international intelligence-sharing.
LONDON: (R.C.) British writer Tom Utley has joined apologists attacking News Media for the Churches' problems with Child Sex-Abuse! The heading hints that it is the News Media that has the "obsession" with paedophilia.
Western Australia: A 60-year-old Dutch-born Catholic priest from New South Wales had abused his position of trust when he indecently dealt with five children under 13, and could expect to go to jail, a judge said today.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has caught 7,272 Britons using credit cards to access child pornography. The FBI seized two web sites in the US and forwarded the information to UK detectives. Source: news.bbc.co.uk |
Pedophiles - warning
British authorities have warned that the Czech Republic, Romania, Portugal and Spain have recently become popular destinations for British pedophiles. http://archiv.radio.cz/news/EN/1999/20.01.html
British Sex Registry - In Britain, it's the law for convicted pedophiles to be placed on a Sex Offenders registry. Three years ago, a British tabloid printed the names, addresses and pictures of one-hundred offenders. The paper, the News of The World, did it again last year after two little girls were abducted and murdered. The managing editor is Stewart Cuttner.

You imply that it's a strangely American problem. It's not. America has confronted its problem and the rest of the Catholic world has not! That's the real story.

Well, my Gay Radar was working when they put the communion wafer into the hand of a pervert volunteer at my last church. I quietly took it, and dropped it on the floor next to the woman who was dying of cancer. Then I quit going to church. If they didn't have better sense to lead the people than that, forget it.

Ah Scoop, it's a waste of your precious time to argue with "Slimey".
He's fixated fixated fixated on each and every aspect of American life that is filthy, vulgar or in some way problematic. For some strange reason (for which I have no answer) I'm repeatedly drawn to his posts -- like flies to a pile of crap -- even though I have learned that to argue is futile.
Regarding your post, Limey, and your question, I think that two gay men having sex before serving communion is utterly gross and defiling of what is a very precious service. I am not Catholic, but I have great reverence for the communion service and what it signifies. Sex within marriage is awesome, but in my humble opinion it would be appropriate for anyone who serves communion to be in prayer (and repentance) during those minutes before communion is served, rather than rattling the bed with sex.
"And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me. . . . This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you'" (Luke 22: 19-20). We celebrate communion to remember Christ's death. So in my mind two gay men having sex five minutes before communion is pretty disgusting, not to mention irreverant.

Who cares what homosexual priests do with their male mates...as long as they are both adults. I don't care what the couple sitting beside me at church (not that I ever sit in one anymore)do in their bedrooms..why should I care what the priest does? Now abuse is another thing all together but sounds like you are talking about partners..or mates.
