They might be old, but so are the women who suffered for so long.
PS I met a woman last week who, as a nine year-old, was evacuated to a village near Leicester where she had quite a surprise.
Of the ten babies in the village - she remembered seeing them in their prams - seven were black. All were the children of GIs. The woman, who was at a VE celebration party, said the babies looked"lovely" and she had been thrilled to see them.

Those wartime fathers are now in their 70's & 80's. Many are deceased. Talk about beating a dead horse!
Unfortunately, there are irresponsible people, both male and female everywhere. There are also a lot of men who did not father children without providing for them. Should everyone pay for the actions of a few?

Thanks for your honest and frank comment. And no, I'm not excusing the British girls' behaviour. (See my previous comments).

I agree that
this should also be extended to those GI's who pulled the same stunt with the Koreans in the Korean War, and I'm sure there were also a few Vietnamese girls who fell victim to this in Vietnam. We even have some girls here in the US who got pregnant and are left alone by their American boyfriends who were going to stand by them no matter what. Women need to be smarter about things like this, and I can say that becuase I am female. But of course British girls never fall in such traps, right??

Vividly put - but don't forget to mention the Welsh, Scottish and Irish sluts! Their names are writ large in local communities.

For once I agree. Yes, there were girls who blatantly chased the Americans, and they were regarde - and still are! - as beyond the pale by local people.
There were also other, decent women who, as I mentioned earlier, were let down by their American husbands and boyfriends.

This was an excellent post. And I have to agree that many British women liked the Americans they met. Their menfolk - fathers and brothers and, of course, the odd husband! - were not nearly as keen!

Burly, you mean to tell me it's a two way street?
We can't blame those dastardly Americans for everything? Perhaps the pretty English girls were in hot pursuit of the American GIs? What a novel idea.

Perhaps we shouldn't have entered the war at all. There would then be no problem whatever. Check out my "life in the slow lane" blog. Your girls were apparently very attracted to American soldiers.

Actuually, I don't hold out much hope that these women will receive compensation. We all know that Americans operate to a might is right policy.
Incidentally is still repaying America for the cost of the war. The last instalment, plus interest,is due on December 31, 2006.

zen, good comments --
I'd venture to guess that quite a pretty penny are owed to those women of the former British colonial empire who were "taken" by the hordes of British men out to take advantage of the wealth of other countries.
Limey, as ever, you're out to blame the wealthiest and most influential country on the planet for a slew of sundry complaints, forgetting that at one time Britain could claim that title. Has Britain been responsible in the way her citizens have repaid others? I doubt it.
PS -- I don't condone the actions of those American men who took their pleasure and left women with the responsibility of a child. They should be responsible for any children they fathered, not the government.
You've got a real big chip on your shoulder. Perhaps a few visits with a shrink would do you some good. On second thought, I am certain it would take more than a few visits. Good luck!

Maybe.
If you can get all those "deadbeat dads" identified and tracked down, then there may be some legal maneuvers to be done to have them pay for what they did. There may be help at the US Army or the Pentagon to help track these men down, provided they are still even alive. But as far as trying to seek some kind of "national recompense" for their actions from the United States, no.
If that were to be the case, then the US would simply countercharge for the expense of the Second World War and Cold War operations. There may even be separate and varied international lawsuits springing from the various peace instruments King George signed with each individual US state after the American Revolution.
Then I'm sure France might start wanting a piece of the action and sue for "hereditary lands" and whatnot. Then there'd be India who may declare some past aggression (as well as other things, not the least of which would be mineral and geographic exploitation) by the British government grounds for some adjusted-for-inflation repyament.
And who knows how many countries would go after Italy for all the adventures and conquests and follies of Rome.
It soulds good when you say it, Limey. It does. It provokes everyone's sense of outrage and desire for justice. The only question then becomes where do you draw the line?
Just a thought. Good topic, though, as always.

Sure, right after we reimburse all black Americans for having ancestors who were slaves, regardless of the fact that many of us did not enter the country until long after it was abolished.
Take a number. Have a seat.

As a woman who was married and then abandoned while pregnant, I would have to say that the suffering and social ostracization is real and the damage to the entire family is permanent. Some people sue major companies for millions of dollars for being permanently injured.
