Moondawg, I've just about given up on organised religion myself, although sometimes I do miss the uplifting music.

wordsmith, that's true. I guess I still have many leftover hangups from an extreme religious upbringing.

Vib - can I just do the chocolate? I'm not too fond of oranges...too messy!

offbeat - does the Bible really say that? Well fancy that. I guess I just pray whereever I am at the time.

Vibrance, that's what I thought!

Tapsel, that's what I think too. But then I've been known to have different thoughts to the church...

LOL Ms N! Do you have a demarcation line around your computer?

Temple, you always have such wonderful advice! I think what I was trying to get across was the rather narrow minded view of most Christian churches. Their beliefs are not my beliefs. But what they say is that any giving other than 10% of ALL earnings to the church is second rate and not worthy. To me that's unbelievable because I think any help to anyone is worthy. Volunteering, donating or giving money to any charitable cause is definitely worthy in my book. You are a love you know. You give all the time. Thanks for taking the time for such a long and valuable comment.

Original - I tried to find that secluded spot, but there wasn't one!

I gave up on the organized
religions, many years ago. I don't think that you have to be a member of a congrgation to worship your higher being. I also don't think that you have to accept any form of religion, as I feel religion is a personal thing. Since nature is an integral part of my spiritual beliefs, I give time and money to an organiztion who is working to conserve the desert here. I go to my place of worship usuall twice a day, that's the desert. It is where I find my spiritual self.

Giving is the essence
of what we are here to do. Give as your mind tells you, not based on what the world expects of you.  You're doing more than okay, Cass.

CA88
Giving to the children is probably the best gift you can give to the Creator. You just wait, you'll find the right place to worship when your least expecting it. In the meatime remember the Bible says you can worship in a closet and your prayers will be heard. Haven't tried that one, but I just bet it's true...

it doesn't have to be a church.
it can be any non-profit organization of your liking. Being spiritual means doing good, not necessarily attending church. Love, Vib

Ca88andra, I've never heard it put before as "second-rate giver."    That's a pretty good description though in the eyes of some.   LOL     I was taught that the tithe goes to the church you attend (actually they used the term "the church I belong to") and then you could give gifts above the tithe to other charities.    If a person doesn't "belong" to a church it looks to me like anything you give anywhere is first-rate giving.

Yes Ca88
Well more of a boycott... and right now I am boycotting my own blog. I can not post in it for another 3 hours. And then I may just delete or move it. Darn thing made it into top 10 in spite of my boycott!

second rate giver....ppffftttt...

First, I'm Catholic, well, grew up in Catholic or at least in some Christian denomination church.  I like Catholic church, in that I love the beauty, the ritual, but there are too many other things that do not fit.  Sometimes I miss things, but, well, for another time.  Being a Buddhist, one of the most important, you could say the foundation, is compassion, community, giving.  I think that means different things to everyone.  I cannot give money, but I will give time and always have.  I have given money when I couldn't also, and when I could.  I rescue animals, and people with my knowledge and any friendship I feel I can offer.  I extend the benefit of my study to those I feel might use it or need it.  It might be small things, but, for example, our sweet Spitfire who is struggling too financially just send me a big bag of the prescription cat food my kids eat and some flea and tick meds for the summer, since she can get them from her vet hospital (she's a tech).  It still cost her some money, but much less than it would have me.  It's a HUGE gesture for me because I can't buy the food now and my kids need it.  Much more important than giving 10% to the church (she's Jewish and a witch, so it doesn't matter, but you get my point).  I tend to help in the world.  Someone has a custody problem and can't afford an attorney, I say, let me see what I can do.  That's how Jimmy and I became friends.  Follow your heart, Cass, that's the most important thing.  Not a specific church or organization.  People ask me who I rescue animals for.  Well, not anyone, for me, for them.  I work with several here, as in Denver...I still feed my Tessa (the feral) for a year and some months now.  I've placed dozens, but just on my own with the help of organizations.  When I was an attorney, I did a lot of volunteer work at domestic violence clinics, did pro bono work.  I've done a lot of volunteer work with at-risk kids for years.  Since the accident, my gestures must be smaller, but my heart is just as big in them.  It's always been a part of my plan.  That's how I do it.  You do it however it feels right, not how someone tells you, to.

I know this has been your quest for a while, so I hope you find a place of comfort.  Great energy and gospel music always helps!  :)  But don't give out of requirement, give out of that voice inside of you that says, yes, this is the time.

I know how you feel about this, Cass...I think God wants us to worship Him in whatever way feels most comfortable to us...Even if that means not attending a specific church or other place of worship.

I think it's important to remember that during Jesus' time, most people worshiped in tents, deserts, or their homes.  I hope that helps you feel better.
