ginnie - sorry I didn't see this comment earlier. I look for fat too, but protein is top of the list for my son. As for being good mother, well.... I try!

Saffron - I also like the dates you can eat and I would love to go out with a lot of guys if I was asked!

wordsmith - we call that long life milk, but the boys don't like it as much cos it has a different taste from the fresh stuff.

Moondawg I think nearly all of us get the milk from the back. Supermarkets must hate us!

posted by Ca88andra on June 4, 2005 at 11:58 PM | link to this | reply

mary, yes. I lay the milk carton on its side on the bottom shelf of the fridge until we go to use it. The carton in use is kept in the door of the fridge. I don't think the date thing is too deep - just a dislike of sour milk really!

posted by Ca88andra on June 4, 2005 at 11:57 PM | link to this | reply

Original and RAME - what I've heard from my naturopath is that there are certain chemicals used in the making of the plastic containers that seep gradually into the milk and aren't particularly good for you. Thats why I buy the milk in cartons and not plastic.

posted by Ca88andra on June 4, 2005 at 11:56 PM | link to this | reply

Merry - that can happen too! I've given up keeping enough milk in the fridge to last till my next shop and I buy more as I need.

mystic - there seems to be a few of us dateophobes about!

ginnie - yes, I check the contents too - for fat and now also protein levels as my son has to eat as much protein as possible. I also try to limit sugar and sodium. We are a funny bunch aren't we?

JJ - yes, I do reach to the back of shelves too and somethings I have to juggle all the other bits that go flying! I am in a big city - Melbourne, which is the second biggest city after Sydney. And no, kangaroos are not everywhere, contrary to popular belief!

dates?
Cassandra -- Had to read this post cuz I wasn't sure if you loved the kind of dates that grow on trees? I love the medjools...or if you like to go out a lot with a lot of guys... but yes, reading dates of products is helpful, too.

posted by SaffronAndSage on June 4, 2005 at 2:46 PM | link to this | reply

Cass,
The only use by date I usually check is milk, but with these new tetra pack boxes, the milk is good far into the next millenium until you open the box that is.

Ca88andra, I always check the dates and dig for the latest.   I just can't help it.

Sure had a laugh at the thought of your 10 min expedition infront of that milk refrigerator. But it is good, u have such a habit, its been, amny a times, that i have got expired items. N then have had to take back. It is more to sulk, then!

posted by Elan27 on June 3, 2005 at 11:40 PM | link to this | reply

Yeah, I am always digging to the back to get the oldest dates.

posted by happyasses on June 3, 2005 at 8:58 PM | link to this | reply

Hey, I check dates too!
there's nothing worse than bringing home expired stuff....getting all geared up to eat it and then being grossed out.  I hate that!

posted by Wildwoman_Laloba on June 3, 2005 at 5:44 PM | link to this | reply

Don't worry,
your not the only one who checks dates and especially always on the milk. I'll actually dig back a few cartons to see if they've just put some in with a later date. Milk in plastic bottles is not a likely to leak.

About your son. Whatever his reason just be happy for the help.

Ca88andra,

I'm trying to get the picture of how you lay the container of milk in the refrigerator. Is it on it's side?  I am feeling guilty about buying a whole gallon of milk, when we usually don't use it all by the time it goes bad.  It's just that a gallon is cheaper than a half gallon.

I don't blame you for checking the dates, but are you sure this isn't symbolic of something deeper?

Rame...so they should be in cardboard????

posted by Original_Influence on June 3, 2005 at 3:31 PM | link to this | reply

Original, milk should be in containers which
block out light as the light detracts from the vitamin D and other nutrients.

posted by RAME on June 3, 2005 at 3:22 PM | link to this | reply

Milk should really be packaged in the plastic bottles...but I forget why...
I always check the dates, because if I don't, I will hear about it from someone....

posted by Original_Influence on June 3, 2005 at 3:18 PM | link to this | reply

After a few unpleasant surprises
I too am very aware of the date on the milk. Of course right now the girls are drinking it faster than I can get it into the house.

Great post - I too suffer from datephobia

LOL Cass...love the title!!
I'm a date freak too. I'm also a nutrition nut. I read every package for calorie and fat count..drives Steve crazy sometimes! As he's been doing the shopping while I haven't been able to get around, I had to give him a few 'lessons'! ;) Now he comes home, very proud at the dates on the food and he's even learned fat content! I think he's doing this more to humour me..he doesnt' really care! Funny post..funny but true! ;)

Cass... I always check milk! There is nothing more disgusting
than getting a mouthful of soured milk. ICK

Ca88,
Oh, Australia.  I don't blame you for checking dates there, particularly if you're not in a big city.  Do Kangaroos come into the grocery stores?   JJ

Ca88,

Where you at girl?  I would have to look extra hard for milk in those funky cartons.  Milk around PHX is almost always in plastic.  I wouldn't think about milk or half-n-half in a paper job.  Occasionally 50/50 is in cardboard, but I avoid it.  Of course, some of those Slam Stockers can make even a plastic jug spring a leak--sometimes even a can.

I always check dates, after reaching all the way to the back for the bottle.  I have worked in grocery stores, which meant stocking shelves.  Whenever possible, reach to the back of the shelf, even if it's for canned tomatoes.  Try not to knock a half dozen things on the floor doing it.  That's real embarassing.

My wife does much the same thing. But how is it that, when I pick up the items, I practically always get the one with the longest span? She constantly gets annoyed, when she goes back and finds that there's nothing with a leter date!

posted by L.E.Gant on June 3, 2005 at 4:09 AM | link to this | reply

offbeat - I know! I'm hopeless! But I'm getting paranoid about the whole milk thing. Every carton I buy lately leaks.

OMG woman.. your a tad over the edge when it comes to dates. I would love to watch you shop, bet it would make my stomach ache from laughter. Just the thought of a woman shaking her milk...lol !!

Lol Khan! Well not fabric softeners, but if the meat looked a bit off.... well, you never can tell!

Khan is disturbed by this milk sniffing
It could lead to the hard stuff, like sniffing fabric softeners and deli meats.

Amateur - I guess I think I'm fanatical about it, because I'm so fussy. Thanks for reading!

posted by Ca88andra on June 3, 2005 at 2:23 AM | link to this | reply

I doubt it's fair to label yourself a 'fanatic' simply because of your habit to check the 'use by' date. That's just common sense.
