Hey, at least you talked to her. The only time I ever had the courage to go up to a girl I didn't know and start talking to her... well, she turned out to be a foreign exchange student. Gah!

Dating, what a concept. First, meet a likely suspect, then make as you said, an "impression", usually not really of our own true personality, jump hoops, throw fish, whatever, go to a restaurant and tell outrageous lies over an overpriced meal, then attempt to keep up said impression. I have never been particularly good at it, myself.
Instead, I met my true love under the worst circumstances of my life, there was no pretense on either side, we never officially "dated", we were friends and allies for a month before we were officially "in love". Why am I telling you this, other than to annoy you? Is that there are other options to the mating ritual. I don't have any real advice for you, except that just letting someone get to know you, without making an official proclamation of all your quirks, foibles, and pecadillloes, can and does work. And, yes, jumping hoops for fish isn't really satisfying.
