I have a sense how there could be a conceptual difference between capitalism and globalization and transnational corporations (that's TNCs, right?). I've been thinking part of the problem is that corporations are not individuals (so much for the romanticized individualist argument!) and they get their power, rights and privileges from government, legally speaking (so much for laissez-faire!). That and the harms that come when profit is pursued over any competing interest, of course. I think it would be possible to have free enterprise and capitalism and private property without having corporations (as we know them) and without privatizing every resource. Rovesciato has pointed out some similarities between corporate capitalism and socialism, interestingly enough.

Dylan...
...I look forward to reading them.
And good on yer for the Amnesty thing!
Hypocrite is something I am - we all are! I'm hugely ecological, yet I own a fast motorcycle. I'm not anti-capitalist (though I am anti-globalisation and antiTNCs in their present forms) and I do invest on my own behalf.
What do I do?

Damon:
I missed your witty and trenchant presence on Blogit. Glad to see that things are moving along well for you personally and professionally....
Your role as tutor especially interests me, as I have done a bit of that myself and have seen how much it can help people to have one-on-one guidance.
You sure are a busy man with a baby on the way, helping out friends manually and academically AND launching these business endeavors. Seems like you have extraordinary energy.
It also always mystifies me a bit how knowledgeable you seem to be about commerical investing considering your deep skepticism toward capitalism! I am not saying that you are hypocritical, though; don't get me wrong.
I am working on an essay or series of essays that seek to develop a critique of welfare statism on the one hand and laissez-faire individualist ideology on the other in service of a kind of communitarian middle-ground that would not fit nicely into any major political party that exists, at least not in my country.
I'm not sure how it will play out, but it would be helpful if you had the opportunity to drop in and comment from time to time, as I want discussion to be as big a part of it as my sometimes-overwrought monologues.
Also, and this may surprise you, I am now a card-carrying member of Amnesty International. I have for awhile been concerned about political persecution, and an unsolicited letter from America's chapter of the organization prompted me to finally do something about it, and send a meager check their way, with hopefully more funds on the way when I become rich, famous and powerful. LOL
Cheers and well wishes as to the wife and baby...
