Maybe

I think Friedman points to the hunkering down of the United States across the world (embassies and consulates are being protected with concrete barriers and bars pretty much everywhere and not just in Muslim countries like Pakistan). And new travel restrictions or more complicated processes are impacting many if not most travelers to the US including those who are coming from Western nations such as Canada or the UK, as I've heard about personally recently.

That said, reactions or backlashes always take us to one extreme before a different sentiment brings us back to the middle.

I saw this column and thought it interesting, but I'm not so sure the trend is as apparent as Friedman implicitly suggests. For example, how does what is happening now compare to the way the US behaved towards Japanese Americans during WWII or communist Americans afterwards? The current circumstances are indeed abhorent, but is it just an aberration?
