Mary, I think her new employer...

was looking for how she makes decisions. My friend chose to give the car to her old friend and have them take the lady to the hospital while she caught the bus with the possible man of her dreams.

I hope they were not looking for ethics because she got the job

There is no right or wrong answer and... yet, they ask the question. I smell a rat here.  It's an odd ethical dilemma to pose to a potential employee. Are you going to be driving in rainstorms, is this a delivery driver job, are you even allowed to pick up passengers in a company car, what if the package you're carrying is on a deadline, so the answer is "no one, it's a violation of the insurance and I owe my soul to the company who hired me."

I am betting the "right" answer (by right, meaning, the one they offer the job to), is "the old friend", an evaluation of loyalty, a diminishing quality between employees and employers.  The little old lady, well, she's just collateral damage, and what do they care about your love life, especially if it interferes with company business.

I find it ironic in all the millions of corpoate crimes, from the dumping of toxic waste, the Enron scandal and now the further scandal of them getting away with it, pension plan plundering, they are giving employees ethics tests.  The most we can do is steal a few pencils, those who still have the jobs. It's like Stalin giving sensitivity tests.

It does sound like a stupid question.

My answer would have to be the old friend.  I don't pick up strangers, ever.  I grew up in a large metropolitan area, and I lock my doors, lock my vehicles, don't accept or take rides with strangers.  I remember when I was single (eons ago) how some of the most promising and attractive-looking men turned out to be complete jerks; looks can be deceiving.

So I'd take a chance that the old friend hadn't turned into a serial killer.  Then I'd call 911 and report a woman who looked like she was in need of medical attention at that location.  The great guy?  I'd dream about him and what could have been for a long time.
