Well, I guess I don't really need to comment on this post - everyone who knows me knows that Montana's healthcare has put me in the poor house.  One of these days the brakes I've needed to have fixed are going to go out before I can get caught up, but hopefully whoever takes the dogs for me after I'm killed will pamper them!  Oh, and yes I would order drugs for myself online.

Temple,

I knew you were bartering sex for pet stuff with a vet tech!! Hmmm, how could I have known that? ;) Well, you do take really good care of your pets and many others do, too. It's just there are still so many others that don't. They think, "Hey! What a bargan! I can get a 40 lb bag of this here Joe Blow's Dog Food fer only $6.99!"

Rach,
If I didn't know you, I'd yell at you, too! Well, no, I would actually lecture you. But I do know you and I know you're a responsible person. So, let me just at least tell you this. I see SO many unspayed dogs that get a disease called Pyometria which is a deadly infection of the uterus. They usually die from it. Many of them get it around the age of 2 or 3, sometimes a little older. It's a very sad thing. So, if you're gonna breed her, spay her right after, K?

Justsouno,

It's funny you bring up the "fixing" humans thing, cause that's an upcoming post of mine! Yes, I do believe it would be a great idea. Mandatory for some. I also believe there should be a law for spaying and neutering animals. You don't want to even know some of the things I see!

Exactly, JJ!
I wish more people would understand that!

Whacky,
I know many think they're helping them but they're certainly not. I'm sure you do take great care of yours! And, yeah, mine get better medical attention than I do, too!

Sorry Firewoman, I didn't even comment to you.
You know how I feel about this.  My cats get good food even if it means I don't eat.  Lately, I'm not even eating, so there was really no money to steal from from there for so long and they had to eat the best bad food I could afford.  I hate that.  But, they gained a little weight and I noticed other ways that they do better on the premium food.  Now, they are back on the prescription diet.....I'm sleeping with a vet tech, so that's how I'm getting that taken care of. ;)  When I got the kids, I could afford them....times change.  I do need to take them in just for general exams soon, and something will give for that.  I wish I could really take care of them like I want to, but you find ways even when you're poor.  I don't get their teeth cleaned, but they only eat dry food (my vet said because of that Mitty's teeth were amazing at 19, like a young adult cat).  My vet told me a while ago that once they are not kittens, canned food really isn't all that good for them and once they hit adult and senior, it's better.  I find low income vets that don't charge or charge on a sliding scale, I educate myself.  If money is a problem, people can still be okay if they look for other options.  I wouldn't take in another animal now though.  People don't realize that animals aren't property, they are like family, and you have responsibility to take care of them like a child.  Those people make me really crazy, too.

Rach, I understand wanting to have puppies..

But, the point is that, outside dog or not, there are nearly 12 million animals euthanized every year.  Many adoptable animals are killed because there is no room for them.  If we have any hope of stopping this, everyone needs to spay and neuter.  Wanting to have puppies is fun, but (and you know I love you) but frankly it's just selfish when you can adopt another dog that could be killed otherwised.  If it were up to me, all professional breeders would be put out of business until we could handle the problem.  It goes far beyond just accidental pregnancies, and into trying to save the animals that we have that are just slaughtered because no one can take care of them.  By having puppies you are putting more animals into the equation that we need to be taking away from.  It's a very hard thing because I've done rescues of adoptable, sweet animals that were stuck in cages endlessly for ages because they have no home (I only give rescues to no-kill or sanctuaries).  I can't take them because I can't afford to take care of them and because it is a stress factor for my animals.

Sorry, little sis, this is a soapbox button for me.  I know you have a good heart....I just don't think today any animal should be producing offspring when so many die.  If you ever just want a small idea about this, look at Petfinder.com and see how many. Please reconsider.

All very good advice...

Yup...

We only feed premium foods to our pets.  Not only does it help them to live fuller more active lives, but there's less clean up for me! ;)

Our cats are fixed, but Bridget is not spayed.  We have not done it because we hoped to breed, but we've just never had a chance to get it going.  And, I don't want to do it half ass.  I want to make sure she's cared for really well if we are going to get into that.  A lot of people yell at me for not spaying her, but it's not like she's an outside dog and has theopportunity to have pups, either.

I love my Dog!
but he was hella expensive when we first got him. But it was so worth it. It was only initially expensive, its not much now. Just dog food every week. Hes sucha good boy!

Amen. This is the truth to both these posts. People should not get
pets they don't or can't care for. It is irresponsible. People should not become pregnant without planning on raising their children. Should there be a (fixing) option for people? It is a serious thought. I hug my kitty and know she won't be with us much longer and I know I can't afford time or money to care for a new one. I will not toy with the idea. Sex is a powerful thing. It can be stopped in animals. People should learn to use it much more prudently. Don't you agree?

Spiff,
Good post.  Anyone who feeds their pets cheap food will be amazed if they spend just a little more on decent stuff.  The difference in the pet's health and contentment is really quite incredible for the small difference in price.   JJ

My dog gets the best food I can find
it is not always the most expensive but what I consider the best. With yearly visits to the vet he sometimes gets better health care than I do. But he is worth every penny.
I don't understand these people who collect cats and dogs. I think their heart is in the right place it is their head that needs some work.
