Sadhamn:
very good point! We can have development and industry without so plundering our resources, but we need strong laws to keep development within reasonable, sustainable limits.

spoiling the ecology
unless the Americans themselves realise that they doing something wrong to themselves and the world at large, the situation cannot be improved. Its true that you dont stop industrialisation for progress but you also cannot destroy the planet for your pettyfogging profit hunt. More than industrialisation, it is unbridled expolitation of resources that is responsible for the pathetic situation.

It's going to take a mix of stick and carrot to improve things - on personal and governmental levels.
Not so long go most people believed smoking was fine. Then it was proved to be a killer and the tobacco companies' dreadful activities were exposed.
Gradually, the climate{!}changed.

Can you be so sure you're right?
Who's informing you, Reni?
Read this from Greenpeace:
Myron Ebell, a director at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, told the BBC's Radio 4 that claims that the climate is threatened are "ridiculous, unrealistic and alarmist."
Mr Ebell neglected to mention that his organisation has received $1.5m from Esso since 1998. Faced with international efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, Esso has engaged in a covert public relations war intended to maintain controversy over climate change. Since 1998, Esso has given over $12 million dollars to supposedly independent 'think tanks', which engage professional public relations firms to cast doubt on the need to combat climate change. The Competitive Enterprise Institute is one of the biggest of these groups.
Mr Ebell also claimed that Britain's chief scientist, Sir David King, "knows nothing about climate science." He said Sir David is an "alarmist" who is "promoting this ridiculous claim."
Sir David says he considers climate change "to be the most serious issue facing us this century and beyond" - more serious even than terrorism.

I agree- things are not good here. But this blog's about America, the leader by far in the environment-destruction stakes.

Check you back yard
As far as huge oil companies and the environment go Limey, don't forget that a BP tanker spilled 300,000 gallons of crude oil along the California coast back in '91 - oops! And they are notorius for gangster style accumulation of land for further drilling. Didn't BP pay the Columbian government to kick peasants off of their land to mine and drill for natural resources?
As far as the heat wave goes, I have two words for ya - Air conditioner.

Only the US to blame.
While I am not one to run around claiming that the US is the cat's meow or anything, this one is a load of hooey, for the most part. I have to call it for what it is. The proponents of environmental Armageddon hate one thing more than anything else: capitalism, and the US has been their key target for a long time.
Never mind that the globe has been warming since before fossil fuels were made. Never mind that Europe for centuries was the world's No. 1 polluter, a position only very recently taken by the US. Never mind that the smog and pollution is so bad in parts of the Orient that from the mountains you can see the atmosphere over low-area cities and parts of the countryside look like a layer cake. Never mind that China actually produces more CO2 pollution, much more, than the US, but their exemption from Kyoto prevents them from being targeted. Never mind that the planet is still warming following the last gloabl cold snap, that ended something past 10,000 years ago. Pollution is something to be worried about, for health reasons, but to the planet we are grossly inconsequential. It can recover, and it will after we kill ourselves off.
As much as I agree with some tenets of the environmental movement, you irritation and your denigration of the US -- on this point -- is actually a bit off the mark. America isn't the big, bad wolf in this one. Everyone shares the blame, no exceptions.

There was supposed to be an ice age around the 17th century... it's claimed that Britain, through burning fossil fuels (coal) managed to stave it off....

Limey-I'm assuming your a Pommey?
I like the Yanks myself, lets not forget all the lovely industry and pollution emitted by Europe whilst we are at it. I was in London at Christmas time, the place is a dirty smelly smog hole now. Wouldn't live back there if you paid me so the Poms must be going some way to helping kill the environment too.
