Thanks, Mihail! It's great to know I'm being read!

Most of the Pakistanis settled in Norway hail from the lower income group. In fact, I am told every second taxi driver is a Pakistani. The quality of life they are getting in Norway, I am sure they would not be able to afford here. That would obviously not apply in the case of your neighbour's father, who must rank among the affluent Pakistanis.

Since I don't read newspapers...

I forgot to say that it is great to have you here. Like many people in my generation I don't read newspapers as much as I used -- I remember we used to get four or five newspapers every morning growing up including the Dawn, the News, Jang etc. But now who really has time, or the interest in the kind of news and the way news is covered. So blogs are a great way to keep up on the news (and be pointed to interesting articles that are worth reading) as well as get the kind of personal commentary that's not possible from cleanly edited articles that tow the newspaper's party line. So, welcome!

Interesting
Interesting to hear that Pakistanis are the largest minority there. Our neighbors' mother was Norwegian when I was growing up in Karachi. And their father Pakistani. He'd gone to Norway to study medicine and had gotten married but then decided to return to practice in Karachi. His two daughters went to my school and we often shared rides to and from KGS. But it sounds like he may have been an exception and most Pakistanis probably just stayed on.
