I've thought about freelancing too! There was one point where I was going to be doing just that, but the guy I was going to be working for turned out to be a joke. What a surprise! Not a bad idea though, and something I should take into consideration =).

Good morning, Mary =). Yes indeed I was asleep to the internet all weekend. You know, these little inner battles do indeed cause a lot of internal damage. The time for change is rapidly approaching.

Well thank you for that compliment =)

As for writing, I've thought about it a lot actually. I guess I consider writing a passion, and I've always believed that if you want to succeed at a passion, you have to have a skill to pay the bills. Programming was my skill. But, maybe I could turn writing into my skill for paying the bills huh? Hmm, it warrants some thought!

Wow, it's really cool to hear from you. It sounds like you've experienced what is fated to be my future. Maybe getting out of this profession wouldn't really be a bad idea.

And hey, kudos on the method of exit. Very nice =)

Yeah, I've had several people suggest the same thing actually, and I really should look into it. I think somewhere in me there's a bit of pride that doesn't want to consider that possibility, but I'll have to get around that.

UnidentifiedHacker - It is awful to be that tired and to need sleep so badly.

Hacker,

That might really be a solution: freelancing, working a less structured, hectic schedule, work out your house, maybe get a couple of clients, instead of a boss.  It could relieve a lot of pressure on you.

Hang tough Hacker...

you could always try to do freelance computer consulting, I knew a guy was charging $75.00hr with a two hour minimum for doing hardware and software troubleshooting in Santa Barbara a couple years back...peace...

U_Hacker...
You write very well, maybe you should turn your attention on that talent? :)

UH,

I spent a lot of time programming on mainframes.  I was able to walk circles around the rest of the applications people on the staff, and whenever there was a technical problem, or an assembler program needed repair or a load module straightened out and re-linked, guess who was first called in?

You know what happened?  They kept dumping more and more shit on me.  Their answer, whenever anything got behind, was to add more programmers.  They gave me a couple of programmers who did things like print 12 boxes of paper on one idiotic program loop.  I spent more time teaching programming than coding.  The project got further behind, and the managers blamed me because ''he has plenty of support.''

Don't let your managers bury you under twenty feet of shit.  They will do it until they kill you.

Good luck.  I know exactly how you feel.  I cussed them out, flipped them off, and left.  Don't let them push you until you become that desperate.  It isn't the best way to go.   JJ

hey UH, before you make any big changes job-wise
find out a little more about the ADA and going for SSDI and that sort of thing.  It has been too many years since I contemplated it. But it bears looking into anyway.
