Good morning.
There are obviously conflicting opinions as to the merits of Jason Live Halloween H2O.
I'll watch them if they arrive here - but not too late at night!

Jason Lives and Halloween H20? Sorry, I'm lost! What's more it's past my bedtime - just gone 12 midnight here.
So it's up the wooden hill and down blanket lane - as my mater used to say.
(No, I'm not taking Beowulf with me).

We used it as an intro to Beowulf - then they had to do a comparative study. Not being familiar with either work - or the Anglo Saxon period - they were all apparently comatose their freshman year when they took World Literature - they actually did quite well - finding it very exciting. Of course I used modern day horror stories - drawing similarities such as the only way to kill a monster is to chop off its head - Jason Lives and Halloween H20 (was that what it was called - I obviously do not watch these - but it pays as a teacher to know about them).

I thought Gardner's Grendel was quite a clever reworking of the story, but not entirely satisfying. What did you students think?

Not in its entirety - only an excerpt. I would like to read it in its entirety and would consider using it as a replacement to the version in our text for next year. I recently read (along with my students), John Gardner's Grendel - obviously it being a modern work - it was not as enjoyable to me. But I like what Mr. Heaney has to say regarding his reasoning behind his translation.

earthy people
as opposed to the who are uncomfortable with anything but modern age.
earthy people are closer to purity of mind because they are "closer to the earth" or " beginnings" as opposed to being advanced awy from it by the inventions and machinations of human beings and having the senses trained from childhood to crave and lust after it: thus pushing them even further away from purity.

No, unfortunately we don't have Folgers coffee here - at least I haven't seen it. Presumably it's not instant coffee? We tend to drink a lot of it here; brands like Kenco, Nescafe, and the rest.
PS Just out of interest, I often see Foulgers Transport lorries on our roads!

Like you I don't quite understand why Fab finds Gaelic creepy. But perhaps it has something to do with the word's antiquity and its unfamiliar spelling and sound?

Gaelic creepy?
Maybe you would you prefer me to call it Irish coffee? But that isn't strictly correct.
Gaelic relates to the Celts - those of Celtic origin in Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man.
In Scotland you'll find Gaelic coffee made from Scotch whisky, in Ireland from Irish whiskey (spelt with an e).
However, what they drink on the Isle of Man, I'm not certain: both, perhaps?

Interesting comments, Limey,
but as usual, I disagree. After all, I would not want to surprise you now, would I? By agreeing? Like many other opinionated pundits on blogit and elsewhere, you have only presented one side. And like many others, it happens to be leftward leaning and off kilter.
Regarding nuclear power, over 90% of France's electricity comes from nuclear power. Perhaps your British engineers could learn from them? To prevent the problems you all have experienced? I would concur that the use of nuclear power is fraught with difficulties and potential disasters. It would need to be very carefully monitored and controlled, and even then, problems could arise. I would never argue that it is the most perfect source of energy but it's a start.
In your scorn and hatred for the President, you have very conveniently forgotten to mention the efforts he has put forth to encourage the design and creation of hybrid and other energy sparing autos. But oh yeah, I forgot, you're only fixated on the negatives associated with this Pres and his Republican party.
And regarding waste products and such, I do have a problem with the practice of dumping waste products and other toxins into the Great Lakes, large rivers, etc. American companies are notorious for this, and very wrong. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil, and this would certainly apply to those companies who put greed over care for the environment.
Regarding Kyoto, I believe that accord is generally a fraud. A variety of scientists have demonstrated that, were all these protocols put into place, by the year 2100, THERE WOULD BE NO MEASURABLE IMPROVEMENT IN THE CLIMATE. So why bother using protocols that are particularly harsh against one particular country (the USA) and would have the most profound negative effect on America's economy. But of course, that's the direction the EU is headed. It is hell bent on becoming the premier world economy so of course they are going to recommend policies in their favor. Oh, and might I add that at one point the US Senate voted 95-0 against this policy. That means both Dems and Repubs voted against it. Oh, but let's blame President Bush entirely for its rejection.
Regarding driving times, gee, wouldn't it be nice to commute only 7.5 miles to work? Hmm, well, but you forgot to take into consideration all the 18 wheeler trucks on the road transporting goods from city to city. I knew a woman whose dad drove orange juice concentrate from Indiana to California and made the round trip almost twice a week. Imagine the diesel a company could save if they only had to drive from the tip of Scotland to the southernmost point of England. Isn't that about the length of the State of California? Not to mention all the freight trains criss crossing this country carrying everything from sweet potatoes to new Ford cars. No, Limey, you still don't get it, but why should I be surprised.
You know, I recall lecturing another British fellow hell bent on harping against Americans. I told him (that would be Damon Leigh) that if I felt he truly cared about America and its citizens, I'd definitely be more receptive to his criticisms. But to continually nag on about the supposed negatives of a country in such a one sided way, and with obvious dripping scorn for its citizens -- you will certainly not find a receptive ear with this broad.
I could go on, but why bother? It's a waste of my time arguing with some folk and besides, I've got to go pollute the air some more by mowing the lawn.
