I think the real story would be the very first time in history that the Virgin Mary appears to anyone but a catholic. Hasn't happened yet which should tell us something.

Well, the vision of the Virgin Mary only appears to those (women in particular) who were completely innocent and obedient at the conception of their first child. This fact must also be public knowledge in order for the image to appear. It's very simple really. The Virgin represents obedient innocence with good intention.
