Is this a wind-up? If not, here's to you, St George and Merry England.

No, there are just too many Yanks who write and behave like you: someone has to make a stand.
And while you're displaying your ignorance, let's get a few things straight: Britain has an unwritten constitution; our country benefits from cabinet government - in other words our destiny's not left in the hands of a single idiot president; and we don't enjoy the dubious pleasure of wheaties. Understand? No, I'm sure you don't.

Like Mike Manc I would also like to know your source for the 15 per cent figture. Somehow, I don't think it's quite right.

Were your aspiring Hemingways and Fitzgeralds excited at the prospect? I'm afraid they could be in for a nasty shock!

PS Tell them that American author Bill Bryson lives here now. His books have become very popular of late.

But if we believe in majority rule we have to accept the decision of the majority. Al Gore and John Kerry failed to get a committed following. I have come to accept that Americans decide between the "best" of the lesser! George Bush was a better alternative to these two men in my mind! That he screwed up is a human failing that is within us all. The problem now is the cover-up!

If the election of a leader is truly in the hands of the people (the 'we' you profess to be a part of) - then you have no argument. My argument that morons elected a like-specimen still stands.

Ms N Depedence,
I sort of look at it a little differently. What it says about Al Gore and John Kerry to allow such a complete idiot walk over them. Don't blame the citizenry. We vote for the lesser!

Dubya got through Yale the same way he did through the military - with Daddy George bailing his sorry ass out of trouble. That does not sir, make him a scholar... but it sure does make a whole lot of voters look like morons.

Is it us Americans, or are you having a bad life? Are you upset that you don't have a constitution? Angered at the fact that you will never get an opportunity to vote someone in to run your little island? Or is it that someone pissed in your wheaties?

Such a quandary.

That was a sad post, but so true, it could've come out of my own mouth.  If I wasn't already married I don't know if I'd ask you or Hayes to marry me!

Perhaps... But then, the US publishes something like 80% of what's written in the Engilish language. Britain only does around 15%...

Limey,
Interesting! However the hole in the Jeff Hayes thesis is: George Bush went to Yale! And Tony Blair seemed to have leaped to his defense! Americans need a lot of help to remain so uneducated!!

Oh Limey!

That is so sweet of you! I thought of you today as I was discussing, with my students, the merits of traveling to Europe and getting 'back in touch' with our literary fathers as Fitzgerald and Hemingway once did. Sigh...

Apart from the Piccadilly Circus Wal-Mart everything else is already in place.

It might interest you to know that a couple of years ago, Norwich Union, one of our major insurance companies, started using an India-based call-centre.

Whether the Indians employ subliminal messages - indeed can they be 'implanted' during telephone conversation? - I'm not sure.

I'm glad to hear you're able to get along with some Britons. But, tell me, which ones do you tend to avoid?

Genocide? This sounds awful: what were the circumstances?

With regard to understanding Brits, would you believe I find it difficult to understand large numbers of my fellow citizens.

I'm cancelling my Blogit subscription--for now.  I have too many other things to do other than Blog.  Good luck to you.  Althought I don't agree with many things you write, I do hope you're here upon my return so that I may begin a fierce debate or two with you...

From American Bunny

In response to your "About Me" rant:

Not to scare you, but soon all of our jobs will be outsourced to India and we will be too poor to buy Levis, Starbucks or movie tickets. Then American mega-coporations and their manufacturing partners in Asia will have to find new markets of people with disposable income. Markets like: Great Britain!

They will descend upon you like winged monkeys! They will bombard you with subliminal messages! There will be a Wal-Mart at Piccadilly Circus! (Not that anyone would necessarily notice; I've seen the photos of the giant glowing billboards for McDonald's and Coca-Cola.)

YOU ....  will be assimilated.

I think this applies in many places beyond America and when people are not educated enough to think for themselves they are not equipped to make good decisions

Don't You Just Hate ... Everybody

Generally, I've found Brits a pretty nice group, although, there are those I would rather not associate with. And I must admit, there are a few, depending on the area they live, I find almost impossible to understand. I decipher a word or two, but everything else is lost somewhere inside a thick accent.

I don't hate Brits because the dress differently, look differently, live differently, or practiced genocide on my people, on both side of my family. I don't hate Brits because of their humor, remember Benny Hill, their food, or, their constant, day to day, tirade against their ancestors who came here to get away from over there.

Shucks, I don reckon eye hate them there yankees over there at all

Well, Limey...I've never commented before because I've either not agreed
or haven't felt the need to.  However, on this issue I must give you credit.  You are correct.  As a school teacher with a degree in (gasp) English Literature, I find the school system here to be abhorrent.  Period.  And why is it that--now that I'm leaving--you FINALLY say something with which I can agree?  Just my luck...  You damned Brits are aggravating...
