Speaking of mixing religion with government . . .

. . . . how about Senator Byrd delvering a sermon on the Old testament book of Esther during a debate on the constitutional option?

"I've never made a big hoop dee doo about being a born-again Christian, but I speak as a born again Christian. Hear me all you evangelicals out there, hear me. Getting back to Esther here, her cousin Mordechai sat at the king's gate day after day, and he refused to do homage to the king. The king was Ahasuerus, Ahasuerus, and his wife's name was Vashti. The king asked Vashti to come in and before all the big shots in the kingdom, and she refused to come. So his advisors advised him to put her away and get a new queen, and so they brought in all the beautiful virgins, maybe not all -- perhaps not all of them -- but they brought enough to dazzle the king's eyes."

Let me get this straight: We can't have the 10 Commandments on public property. We can't have prayer or Bibles in school. But a liberal Senator who lectures on Scripture in the Senate isn't criticized by the people who oppose these other public expressions of religion?

and forgive me if I am wrong, wasn't the reason people began to come to America in the first place, to escape religious persecution?  The freedom to believe how they wanted to beleive and the freedom to worship (or not) in any manner they chose...

why have we seem to have forgotten this fact?

free speech means free speech
and you are correct that no one should be restricted from speaking their mind

however, to use gay marriage as a plank in a campaign platform, to me, is mixing church and state, promoting an idea rooted in religious ideology.

And it goes on today

I understand that California is making it illegal for political candidates to speak out against gay marriage. If so, then the state is "mixing religion with government" by suppressing the public expression of opinions based on the ethics and morals of Christianity and Judaism, quite likely other faiths as well.

Sean Sean Sean -- No Wonder I Never Read Your Column
"'In The Year of our LORD July 4th, 1776' Caps Off U.S. Constitution!"

You just can't seem to get information correct. The US Constitution wasn't ratified until 1787. The Declaration of Independence (DOI) was published on July 4th, 1776 "capped off" by the the heading "In Congress July 4th, 1776." There was no mention of The Lord to "cap off" either document. What's more, the DOI proclaims that "...all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights..." The US Constitution does not address such issues as creators and God.

The reference to "their" creator in the DOI carries a lot of weight because it allows for everyone to define their personal beliefs about creationism in any fashion they like. Hopi Americans, for example, could enjoy inalienable rights as men (and women) because their creator endowed them with said rights even though their creator differs from the Euro-Christian definition of creationism. That's the beauty of early American documents. In fact, they were based upon far more philosophical stances than on the rigid insistence of Christian beliefs.

Please, Sean, do your homework. Elsewise, you sound just like another ranting zealot overwhelmed by ignorance and a lack of education.                                                                 DM

"In The Year of our LORD July 4th, 1776" Caps Off U.S. Constitution!

It also says that U.S. citizens have been "Endowed by our Creator" with right that cannot be taken away.  But if the rights were given to us by men then men could take them away but since they are given by God they are 'Inalienable".

God and religion mix for good reason here in the U.S., without God in the Constitution our liberty hinges on rusted pins.

Don't be taken in by a bumper sticker thought up by a socialist.
