There was a girl in our class
whom I found out years later was a lesbian. She wasn't really a close friend but there were only 30 people in our class so everyone knew everyone. We got along okay.
You are right though about being supportive. Most teenagers are so deluged with their own problems and issues that there isn't much left for anyone but their closest! friend.
Even then, peer pressure is a powerful thing...

Well, when I was in school...
there was no such thing, and I'm betting Whim knows nwhat I mean there...being gay was not nearly as acceptable as it has become. I had a few guy friends who were Gay (I think), but they were ostracized by nearly the entire school. Hell, Rob Halford was still in the closet...It's too bad it was like that, and the Gay/Straioght alliance is a good thing...it is never wrong to love.

Actually at my high school, they started a club called the "Gay/Straight Allience". It caused a uproar (as in national media attention), but it gave the gay students a place to go for acceptance and support.
