Mary - I just had to write some sympathy cards for "Loss of Partner"
I don't think they meant bridge partners--at least I hope not or I made one doozy of a mistake. LOL

Hollee,
Haven't all the "special friends" come out of the closet yet?

Mary - editors know that sometimes a category requires the
use of the word special as in 'special friend'--but other than that--it is a word that can be misinterpreted.

or the "short, happy yellow bus" special?  How do editors feel about that in general? It seems like addressing a card "to someone special" feels a little vague.

I agree Mary - When I hear that I'm special, I wonder, "as in stop eating

the paste special?"

Hollee,
I have been studying cards lately (buying for family and friends) and I think there ought to be a moratorium on the word "special".  If I see the word special, I automatically think of the Saturday Night Live Church Lady "Well, isn't that spesh-ul!"  and also, that if I were to get a card that told me I was special, I would assume that I wasn't.
