This is part of the reason so many of us in Europe - not just Britain - are vehemently opposed to GM crops and food. Take a look at the Greenpeace site for more details.

LE Grant
You're right about the rapid rise in obesity levels here - so you'll understand my strong objection to America's fast-food firms.

Interesting about the Maoris. Last year an English newspaper ran a story about a woman who traced her unknown father to New Zealand. He turned out to have been a World War 2 flyer - a pilot or navigator, I believe, and a Maori.

Britain's decreasing pollution level shows what can be achieved. America must take note.

Do yourself a favour: take off you rose tinted glasses and see the US for what it is.

Far too personal, Taffy
I wrote elsewhere that Americans are quick to become personal - something with which the English are always unhappy. So I know you'll understand my reluctance to discuss my height and weight. However, as a show of goodwill today I've decided to tackle the subject of British teeth. See my post sent a few minutes ago.

fwmystic. Does America really have cows that will turn into hens?
And in just 12 days. What a country!

I was going to comment that Britain has a rather large percentage of obese people too. And that it is also extremely guilty of polluting the atmosphere, although that has improved dramatically since the sixties. But I see that some people have already beaten me to it.

Oh, btw, NZ didn't move the Maori to safety; it was the British - long before NZ became a country in its own right. Despite that, the NZ contingent in both big wars included a sizeable number Maori. We're still having to deal with Maori for their feelings of dispossssion...

I think the food is making Americans fat ...
In their ever ending quest to squeeze more yield out of every chicken, cow, tree, and plant, large agriculture companies are pumping hundreds of steriods, preservatives, fertilizers and vitamins into anything that is considered food. Vegetables, for example, are picked before they are ripe and then shot with goo that allows them to develop while they are in transit without the sun.

A chicken will go from chicken to full grown hen in 12 days. Same with cows.

My point is that while this practice is common in America, I fear no corner of the planet will be safe from these high yield, efficient means of agriculture.

Not fair!!

Kind Sir,

How much do you weight & what is your height?

Billy - stone me, don't use stones?
I know you calculate length in feet and inches and measure petrol - or gasoline, as you call it - in gallons. But in the case of weight it's obvious you don't use stones.

For what it's worth, there are 14 pounds to a stone.

Were you FURTHER aware

In England, the drinking water has so much prozac in it that it is measurable and at levels that are able to impact the person drinking it.

Do you know why? - Treated effulent (sewage) Being recycled.

Where does it come from? The population is taking it in such high amounts they are  urinating it off and its actually causing a rise in the levels in the fresh water.

Limey - While it is true that America has very high obesity percentages, it would be well to realize that is not the only country with this problem.  Sir John Bourn, head of the National Audit Office, recently told Parliament that most adults in England are now overweight--"nearly two thirds of men and over half of women are obese."    He also says, "The problem here (England) is increasing faster than in most other European countries."   Also, a recent study regarding England's problem with obesity in children was pretty revealing of the same problems that American's face.    Were you aware of this information?
