If you have critters,
you don't have to cut it off, they will shred it off for you. Had a cat who used to sleep in the back of a recliner. Had to be careful when we sat down not to catch him in the mechanics.

And to help that along:
Cut the funny fabric off the bottom of your upholstered chairs. It's there to keep critters out, but you can tip it back and vacuum once a month. Foreign objects will travel through the sofa and to the ground, where they can be more-easily retrieved than from inside the piece.
