Marriage is such a hard question to deal with.  I'm not sure why so many people have a need to create a legal definition.  It seems like there are several different angles to view marriage from:

  • Family unit (if you want kids then one man and one woman seems to work best - unless you want lots of kids in which case many women are good.)
  • Partnership - to run the househole
  • Companionship - just someone to keep you company.
  • Free sex - cause you can't afford to keep paying?
  • Tax breaks
  • Insurance benefits
  • Romance
  • Free housekeeping and child care services

I supose you could go on forever.  I think that the states just want to collect funds from people who are getting married though.  Pay us $80 for a marriage license and we'll give you a tax discount later...don't know why they would care who or what you married at that point.
