I've heard that, too. Give me his name and I'll set him straight.
Fifty-first State? We're already your European aircraft carrier, isn'that enough?
We were loathed? Imagine what people think of you.

Don't be taken in by the rhetoric, Marshallengraved. Most Americans are not open minded. (Try this little test: tell them you're a communist or appear in knickers made from the Stars and Stripes and watch their reaction).
Yes, it is true that in America anything's possible if you work hard - provided you're not poor, sick or Middle Eastern.
But then virtually anything's possible in France or Britain - and we also have great health and welfare systems.

Of course you don't tell the full story...
Operation Clark County was an attempt to get Ohio voters to vote for Kerry. Now, I didn't want Bush in office, but this was not the place of the UK to do this.
The last post actually sums up the problems with this thinking, but there were a lot of
entries that were positive and kind...which of course you failed to mention. You say we are crass and lack decorum? Do our newspapers contact you and tell you how to run your lives? Yes, our government is lacking and rediculous. We are bullies. I'm afraid I agree with you. But, if you are going to come to my house...the house of a strong, American, woman...and piss on the rug and stomp about like a four-year-old having a tantrum, know your facts and state the full story.
The Guardian is not a very reputable paper and knew that this little experiment would upset people, that's why they did it. Alas, I know that you are doing this for shock value. You are probably not even really British. You're not polite enough by your own standards to be.

I like Americans
They are very open minded in their mentality, unlike many French ppl...
I don't like conventional, rightist and old fashioned Americans, but I despise conventional Europeans the same way...not all of them are pro Bush lol
I like America as a country, because it is the land where anything's possible if you work hard enough for it.
I hope to visit the USA asap!

Mann, don't forget Doonsbury - there's an agenda-filled funny. Anywho, why hate a bunch of debt-laden, Twinkie-filled dough asses (my word for the morning) who are on their way out? It's not worth anyone's time. I am NOT proud to be an American - but I have it really good, so for now... "Praise The Lord and pass the ammunition."

Limey, your sense of history is ironic. A Brit calling the US invasive? That's rich! You're just sore that the sun doesn't set on the British Empire any more.

You are very funny.
Contrary to what you say, a lot of the English actually like Americans and I even heard that some wanted the UK to become the 51st state. It wasn't that long ago that the Brits were loathed worldwide. So carryon.

Oh Yes, Limey!
And The Guardian prints nothing but truth! Surely, those money-grubbing editors at The Guardian would never stoop to fabrication!
C'mon, even Ariala can recognize the contrived nature of those letters from Ohio.
Generally speaking, Americans don't harbor half the sophistication that these example letters display. What's more, some of them even contained a bit of sardonic flavor. Not characteristic of Americans. Something doesn't add up, here.
I believe everything I read in the funny papers because nobody has an agenda!
Limey, you can do better than this, I'm sure!
Cheerio, old bean! DM
