Robodon,
I really enjoyed watching CJ Craig, Toby and Josh, Pres. Bartlett, Leo etc. hash out the Big Issues of the day, but it just breaks my heart that that is not the reality here.

Thanks for your well considered response ... I can certainly understand the sentiments when it comes to the reality of politics and the rather cynical and manipulative motivations that seem to be part of the political process.

Robodon,
We've gotten immersed in West Wing as well. I was turned onto by my, for lack of a better word, Significant Other. I relate to the desire to work in a passionate, intense environment where everyone struggles to make an impact and cares deeply about the social good.
Unfortunately, the disconnect between what is on the show and what we have in real life is so maddening, that I felt that I was being deliberately manipulated by watching the show. I would love to believe that in the secret chambers of the White House, advisors, pr people and speechwriters debate and fight for justice, but I'm afraid, the reality is the conversations are much more shallow and go something like, "Well, whose pocket are we in this week? What backs can we scratch?" So, I stopped believing in Santa Claus, Virginia and turned away from West Wing (except for the new ones. I still want to see if Jimmy Smits or Alan Alda get elected.)
