i see your question as a valid one. it is hard to understand at first, but if you stick with it, it will reveal itself to you. truth cannot be given from one person to another. what can be given is what truth is not, just as in seeing what love is not. the mind must be aware of itself as it creates these pseudo-states of being. freedom thus means the realization that what is believed to be happiness is unhappiness, and so forth. little by little, as the student awakens, more of what is needed is given. but the secret is that we give it to ourselves. when the student is ready, the teacher appears...

you're right about hearing with spiritual ears, and seeing truth. it is a process of understanding things that are not taught in schools, such as respect and love.

Give them what they need
Instead of what they want, as Pappy just said... yes, I think that is why Master's teach in parables... or give them what they are ready for - He who has ears hear, He who has eyes see.  Those receive through their Master's teaching what they are ready for - with whatever ears or eyes they are using... whatever Holy text you are reading can unfold like petals depending upon which of your faculties you are using... unfortunately, there are way too many people using only the basest of thier faculties for their understanding...  great post.  Metta

Avant, what does the student want to be, happy?to be enlightened?does one need to be what they choose to be?demonstrating spiritual truths is good.can you give someone enlightenment or freedom?was Jesus,Mohamhed,Lao Tzu,Krishna given enlightenment?I have read that Zen is a flower and can be given to someone deserving. Can a master give a student what he wants?security as the master/disciple relationship is not the students freedom,as student depending on the master. What a master can do by being with a disciple is share the vibe,if feeling is what the disciple is longing for,the master is the truth it is real. As when being with sad or happy people it may be invasive to yourself. If I am mad I project this,If I am happy I project that.my experience is, words go hand in hand with the feeling of which it came. The feeling is enough but the words are seperate or reinvented through the readers feelings. In a reply you spoke of leaving to go into the wilderness and thinking what this is all about,or what for. speaking of it does not recreate what was.Say the woods is the master and the human is the student, the woods is there welcoming being its feeling, yet as a student we can approach and enter the woods with loads of gear to share, but the woods is what has everything to share, and the student has everything in accepting that.

this seems abstract as I reread it,thanks avant-garde

Hello, avant
Give them what they need  instead of what they want is what you're saying.  It is not the road to popularity and though that is not the most important thing, there should be joy in there somewhere.  Perhaps the unraveling of the mystery is part of the interest.  Making the listener work it out for themselves brings it home.  Good post.
