I didn't realize you were back.  It's good to see you.  I hope Adrienne is well....Ah words, and the power that people give them...

I do believe we can speak misfortune on others.
Think back to biblical times. People blessed and cursed others and their words came to pass. This is a good, instructive post.

Alf - Our words have the power of life and death according to Solomon.
My paraphrase. He spoke a little loftier. :)

Georgia...I write alot about the power of words.

Speaking positive words out loud (affirmations) has become quite popular with the masses, but it had its origin in the Christian movement. Many well-known evangelists and preachers have been preaching for years that speaking God's word with faith can and will change outward circumstances. (Mark 11:23)

You're right. It's an intriquing topic that is really in its infancy.

This reminds me of a story my friend told me about her husband, who is a physics professor.  He said that when studying quantum physics, the experimenters found that the energy they exerted in thinking about the atoms they were studying changed the behavior of the atoms.  There is such energy in mere thought that even atoms and quarks are influenced by the energy of the scientist studying them.  Some experiments had to be scrapped because the observation of the scientists biased the behavior of the atoms due to the energy of their thoughts.  I can't help but wonder what power thoughts must have when put into words ... I wonder if the energy is accelerated or diminished by verbalization?  Interesting!  Then there are also all of the studies that say that prayer makes a difference.  Some studies say that plants that are prayed for grow faster than those that are not.  There's a lot to this!  What an interesting subject!

Gypsy...
Let me know how your experiment goes.  Thanks for reading.

Alf....
Very intriquing post. I'm thinking about it and wondering if all the times I've wished certain people ill out loud has come to fruition? I think I need to check this theory out. I want someone to visit someday so I think I'll say that out loud too while I'm at it. It's going to be a fun week and people are going to be staring at me for talking to myself!

The most powerful words in the English language are: "I am ...." whatever follows is either true  or a becoming true. The next most powerful words are "You are..." The words that follow sink deep into the subconscious.

Why? Simply because the subconscious is a strange beastie. It does not recognise the negative, but works to9 make the concrete come true. You wondered (more or less) why negative thoughts tend to come true, rather than positive ones. The answer's right there: we can "concretise" the negative, while most often the positive is nice, but abstract.

Blessing people... how does that get made real? Most people can't imagine what it looks like or what it feels like. But cursing people... that's usually with something that they can imagine, even make concrete. So, they do.

If you are going to bless people (good thing to do) then put it into concrete terms: what does it look like, feel like, sound like, smell like, taste like? Then you'll see your good wishes become real. (oh,use the same approach when using "I am"....)

Passionflower...

Thank you, and yes I think if we could speak well of people with the same level of intent that we speak ill of them...good things might happen.

GREAT POST!!!

You've made some intriquing suppositions that I could expound on all day. But then of course, it would turn into a 12-page comment.

One thing that really caught my eye is your explanation of why evil words work so well and good ones dont'. It's the level of emotion involved in the person speaking. In other words, if you could somehow conjure up strong feelings for someone so that when you said,

"I want you to be blessed beyond measure today. I'm truly praying you win the lottery this week. And I pray with all my heart that everything you touch from now on prospers greatly", then those words spoken with genuine fervency might actually have some hope of coming true.

Plus there's the thing about what Tapsel was saying...people just naturally want to believe bad things. It's much easier to say convincingly, "I hope you drop dead today!" or something dreadful like that.

Well, I also had a comment about some of the other stuff but this is quickly becoming the BLOG WHO ATE CHICAGO.
