I always have had a theory that he may be also been
sneaking material in also! These type of crimes should always be punishable by jail time no matter what!!

Good comments, everyone!

Painter, this one hits me both on the political and professional levels. What he did, and what the National Archives staff did or didn't do to prevent it, is a huge affront to the ethics of my profession. It may be nothing to someone outside the field, but it is very serious indeed within it.

offbeatpub, welcome! Perhaps he did have inside help. If so, that raises even more issues at the professional level. And this never was a big issue for the news media. Believe me, had it been a Republican, most especially someone from the Bush administration, it would have been a "real issue" indeed, to use painter's term.

Scoop, I see nothing wrong at all with a lifetime revocation of his security clearance. Think about it - he is a former national security advisor who committed theft. The penalty for him should be harsh, because he held a poriveleged position and abused the daylights out of it. I'm afraid you're right about this not being the only instance; but even if it is only one of many cases, does this excuse him from punishment commensurate with the position he abused?

He deserves jail time

But under a plea agreement if approved he would get no jail time and pay a fine, surrender his security clearance for three years, this is bull he should be banned for life. Because he admitted that on two occasions in 2003 he left the archives with copies of documents about anti-terror efforts and notes that he took on those documents.

The problem is we know what he did? We know what Nixon did, what don’t we know? It is probably staggering what both political parties have destroyed and altered to fit their needs and to cover up matters.

What will become of this? I find it odd it has taken so many years to get to the matter. You look at the big picture and wonder why and how. He was obviously helped by the National Archives, and allowed to fall into obscurity by the Clinton white house. If it wasn't for the Pope being the center of the news, maybe we would have more info.

why are you paying so much attention to what is mainly nothing?
is this to divert attention away from the real issues?
