Protection, DamonLeigh,
appears to be in the eye of the beholder.  Or maybe the occupier and occupied.

Great Post, Saul...
...and eloquent comment, Elmubarak. (That name rings bells with me...)

Until Iraq can defend itself against...what? A marauding, imperialist state with a thirst for oil and reconstruction contracts, run by a corrupt and slightly barmy oil man (Failed!) who seriously threatens to use nukes if there's too much trouble?

Hmmmmm....

D

At least make it a territory if we're going to stay there that long.

Or maybe we could just make Iraq another state?  Ten years seems optimistic.

Well, ya know, HolyGrail,
if someone were to sic a pit bull on Dubya's ass, I don't think I'd have a problem trying to get that poor dog to a vet.

Saul, I think in his mind, Bush thinks he can walk on oil

A point lots of people miss, Elmubarak.

Oil is a driving force (no pun intended) for all sorts of politics and military actions.  Has been for quite some time.  Consider that Iraq sits on 1/6 of the planet's oil, the argument that we are there to hijack their oil becomes nearly compelling.  Liberation, freedom, and democracy are all just rhetoric to disguise what Dubya and Co.  really want with Iraq, I agree.  But I have a sneaking suspicion that it isn't all about the oil.  Dubya is an evangelical on a mission.  He thinks, I beleive, as president of the most powerful nation on the planet, than he can affect international affairs to facilitate the second coming of Christ.

And it is that facilitation I fear more than anything else about Dubya.

You know...

Oil is a rather under-used word these days.  Our longterm military presence in The Gulf will never end untill the last of the black gold has been sucked out of that area.  The theoretical "half way point" in world oil reserves has either been reached or will soon be reached and that is when the big money will be made.  This is what it is all about.  And we poor little saps in this great powerful nation are being taken for a ride to death in foreign lands and poverty at home.

Economically speaking, banruptcy nationally is just a new opportunity for the haves, who can go round and round on the capitalist merry-go-round for as long as God does not intervene in our affairs.  Power will always make fools of the trusting and call those who don't trust crazy.  It is an old, tired, but effective game, so long as we collectively remain willing participants in the game.  If we give our selves to God, meaning by complete submission, then we have a chance.  But men-as-gods, which describes our economic, social, and political systems today will always disappoint us.

How do we get liberals and people who are just plain realists who choose not to lie to go back to the God of Social Justice?  That is when things change.  That is when everything changes.
