People hang on to their guilt. I think it makes them feel powerful, as if it is proof that they are responsible for something, even if it is something nobody wants.

so true. the trick, as it were, is to recognize when the ego slides in and gives the appearance of giving us something beneficial. it's easy to pander to it when we get a benefit from it.

I think the mind does have a hidden agenda - when it's controlled by Ego. If one can control Ego, then the hidden agenda disappears.
