I agree
Even if he is a changed man, he owes society his life. If he is a changed man, he would not be able to live with the guilt of his crimes. If he is a changed man, he should be willing to lay down his life to pay his debt to society. But whether he is changed or not, I am confident that he will be, and should be, put to death.

GoldenMean,
you could be right.  Let's hope he is a changed man.  But I doubt it.  He probably figured this was his best chance to not get his ass blown away by every trigger-happy and Nichols-wanting cop in Atlanta.  He still faces capital murder charges.  And Georgia still has the death penalty.  However, if this is a clever ploy by the bastard to get a life sentence instead by appealing to all the bleeding-heart born-agains -- I hope they fry his ass (at least, lethally inject it).

I am with you here. This is also my objection to "the hand of God in everything." Christians imagine God doing all sorts of amazing things, but He won't stop criminals and tyrants. As you say, the innocent people that Nichols murdered could have used a little divine influence.

My dear Baptist mother was talking about this case last night. She says that God only helps those who ask for help, who ask in the right way, on their knees and humble. So, theoretically, Ashley asked for God's help in the right way, then Nichols did, and presto, a murderer's heart was changed.

I don't buy it, but consider this. Belief is one of the most powerful forces in human history. Some people NEED belief to reinforce their own weakness. Belief sends martyrs to their deaths, it turns mobs into obedient flocks, and it sends armies marching to war. It can also changed a murderer's heart. I don't care what Nichols believes, as long as it truly changes him. He will pay for his crimes, anyway, but perhaps he will no longer be a threat to others.
