There was a time in my life when I could tell you the difference between the report of an UZI or a Tech 9 or any number of automatic weapons. No, I've never been in the military or part of some crazed survivalist group. This is simply how things used to be in my old neighborhood. I didn't see Heston or any of his other gun rights cronies anywhere around, but my mother and aunts were. If someone wants to hunt, fine (I'm also a southerner and understand that part of the culture), but nobody (outside of active members of the armed forces) needs a machine gun. Nobody under any circumstances.
