I spoke to a former undercover gang taskforce member.
He says the "link" between our "surrenos" and ther "maras" is highly overblown, a product of California gang machio BS and the press's stake in good headlines. As for the countries naming us as the cause of their problems, sorry, not supportyed very well when individual cases are looked at closely.

maj, thanks for the wonderful link. I know that the anti--gang squads
here in my town bully kids until they name more people who are in their 'gang', before calling parents or giving them a lawyer to talk to. This way they bump up the number of gang members and the NEED for their anti-gang squad. There was a big scandal about this a few years ago, a little boy named all of his cousins and brothers......before they would call his worried mother, to let her know where he was.
I am sure that the anti-maras in Honduras, Salvador, etc. are using Abu Ghraib techniques to get 'more' names of other gang members and that this puts many innocent 'wannabes' and hangers on in deep trouble and labelled forever, thus in danger of the death squads run by the police. A real mess.....

We have to protect the surenos here as we are norteno country. Most are assoicates or wannabees.
There also the "DO"'s, or "dropouts", and a splinter group of older members whose name I can't remember.
